I’ve started this thread for Andrew, he’s a bit intimidated by the thought of writing this, I have said no one cares as long as there is photos So Uncle Richard had a VW beetle, I think this one was his 3rd one. In the mid 1980s he got a company car, so the beetle went into the garage and was used less and less until it was just stored. Uncle Richard sadly passed away, and Andrew bought the beetle Andrew went and moved it ready for Shipley And it came home It wouldn’t turn over when he tried to move the pulleys, so he’s been putting diesel down the plug holes this week

We went over today and had a look.... It’s a little bit crusty but not bad at all for a beetle! But crusty round the arches The floors are covered in surface rust, but look pretty solid They are a bit soft at the back Front wheel arches aren’t too bad Battery tray The spare wheel is brand new, still with release agent on it (but is 35 years old) there is a ugly blob behind it Andrew has been putting diesel in the bores this week as it wouldn’t turn over. So we gave the starter motor a once over Disconnected the fuel lines, put a battery in it and got it running imgur.com/a/DEK7EAA

Looks a nice original car, Even with the crusty bits it looks honest and straight, Great too see it coming back to life.

The car has done 72560 miles! And Andrew has the service book Which has every service stamped Right up to the last one, at 72400 miles In the door pocket was a wallet, with I assume a bit of cash for emergencies when out in the car The original radio is still fitted, with an under the dash cassette player, Not quite sure of andrewstoys plans (he needs to finish the kitchen and garage before being allowed to play any more I think ) But to start with I think rust treating to stop the rust going further. Definitely an oil change (because they’ll be diesel in the oil) it needs a new exhaust and probably drop the engine and clean up around it. Strip inside and see how the floors look then decide if he should patch it and use it for a few years, or strip and restore Personally I quite like the idea of retaining the patina, and just working on the bits that need it. Bringing it back to life and using it, with a view to doing a more extensive restoration in years to come.... But it’s not mine to decide that Either way, it’s a keeper and whatever he does he won’t be selling it

The patina is part of its history and if you need a few patches welded in for now to make it useable you can always go for a deeper resto later, Much better to have a road going user than a project you might not see any fun out of for a few years.

A full current history. Thats amazing. Start a file NOW documenting every penny spent. It would be a crime to stop the history now. And no I'm not a bufty but The interior looks to be in lovely shape.

Great score. I agree - just get it on the road first. Worry about the rest later.

Yup.
I love Beetles, had a few.
Make it run, well.
Keep it as original as possible, after all, it’s a slippery slope when it comes to restoration

Amazingly consistent annual mileage of almost exactly 6,000 miles per year!

I'd also vote for getting it on the road with as much original character as possible kept intact BUT don't just blob patches over rust to tide it over. My favourite Beetle of the 15 or so that I've owned was an orange '70 (used to be just behind Springhill shops for oldisbetter ) that needed a pair of heater channels, a front lower quarter and a rear lower quarter. It had never been welded so I drilled the heater channels out along the spot welds, slid the old ones out and the new ones in, plug welded through the holes then modified the quarter repairs to be as small as possible. Most people couldn't tell that repairs had been done at all. Try to make the repairs blend into the original lines, you'll hate having to go back and re-do it later! Oh, and with that number plate you need a lairy big motor with a massive draw-through turbo system with loads of lag but tyre shredding power!

neildavies, I have seen quite a few VW cars behind the shops not been looking recently but there was a mk2 golf about a lot, I think my mate had a camper stored in one of the garages for a while.

neildavies , I have seen quite a few VW cars behind the shops not been looking recently but there was a mk2 golf about a lot, I think my mate had a camper stored in one of the garages for a while. About 15 years ago me and my mates had six of the 12 garages to fill with VWs! I'd got my drag Beetle plus another one full of parts, one mate had a '61 RHD Karmann Ghia in there, another mate had loads of stuff including a '51 Barndoor 15-window bus (apparently the only one in existence) and a '67 squareback. The police turned up one night at about 3am when we were putting the old Outrage Speedster drag car in one of the garages after Bug Jam! Andrew, sorry about the thread hi-jack! Plan out what you need to do to the car. Personally I'd wash it off first, then remove the bumpers, wings and running boards (slowly, lots of plusgas on the bolts!) and thoroughly clean under the arches and the floorpan. Pressure wash it or steam clean it. Get rid of as much of the loose crispy undersea and paint as possible, then work out your welding repairs. It looks really unmolested so you should be able to work out how they were built, which is the best way of working out how to repair them. Plenty of photos will help.

Love that! Look at you with your newfangled soft-impact steering wheel and directional windscreen vents Why, they'll be expecting people to have rear seatbelts next. Where will it end? One day some fool will introduce ashtray delete cubby holes and other madness Brilliant time capsule! £1 notes were withdrawn in 1988 Didn't the Queen look perky back then?
