Friend has an ‘02 Grand Vitara 2.0 petrol, which failed MOT on emissions. Exhaust is blowing which might be the cause? The cat has been removed at some point which will also not be helping. Is it worth trying without a cat or really need one to pass? Have an Audi a8 to break so could pinch one off that to save him a few bob. Be interested to hear what you think.

The emissions are pretty tough after '01 so I'd definitely get a cat. If you can, go genuine, even if it is for a good secondhand unit; pattern items can be a lottery in performance and fit.
I've had 2 cars "fail" an MOT previously because of a pattern cat.
The blow will not help at all either. What figures did he get from the emissions? That's normally quite telling as to what is up.

First used before 1st September 02 it would get a basic two gas test as there are no specific limits in the ega database for Suzuki . Still a fail for no cat though

1995 to 2002 is a basic cat test if not found in the book (from memory, and Suzuki isn't listed as stated above) If you have the readings from the emissions test, post them up for us all to have a guess at tho And a missing cat is an MOT failure, as is the EML not working or illuminated indicating a fault

From a diagnostic point of view not knowing what part of the emissions test it failed makes life harder. But not having a cat is not going to help, and as stated is also a failure in its own right.

I havent seen the fail sheet, only talked over the phone. Will see him a week on Monday as he has gone away for a week. I will get the cats off the Audi while I wait. Hope they are OK.
