Hi I'm looking for a good block sanding set for my car body work. Not afraid on spending money but want a good set that will last . Any help on what you have use , what i should stay away from etc.

If you're talking about the blocks you wrap wet and dry around, I just used a variety of different things when I was doing my recent restoration and while there are issues with the final finish, I'm not sure the blocks are at fault. I've got a standard cork block, a foam block, a plastic thing that has a bit of foam on it, that kind of stuff. For certain parts of the body they weren't any use, so I've used varying diameters of foam pipe insulation, or hard plastic pipe, and various sizes of MDF as sold blocks when the cork one is too wide.

Only one way to go with sanding blocks and that's the Velcro type for dry sanding - 'Mirka' is at the forefront in this field - used by professionals throughout the world - spend a little time & money hooking this to a vacuum and you can give yourself a virtually dust free environment whilst sanding - saves so much time & hassle and genuinely worth the investment - starter kits are available - but with a bit of online research a set up can be achieved with cheap Henry type vac and vac hose adaptors - for wet sanding a simple 3M type rubber block will do the job - a couple of links below to Mirka's website & a online retailer - have a look - if you are unsure of what to purchase - repost with some pics or description of what you want are rubbing down / blocking back and I can advise further - my workshop simply could not function without this kit / product www.mirka.com/uk/abranet/www.mirkareseller.co.uk/index.php |

Abranet is amazing. On plastic parts, it's excellent for removing material without "fluffing up" the material and leaving fibres in the paint.

Hmm - You say you don't need dust extraction - I would argue otherwise - Mirka's Abranet system is well worth the expense but what a lot of people do not take into consideration is way in which abrasives work - without being over technical they remove surface layers by moving the abrasive over the surface - said movement creates friction and friction generates heat which in turn blocks / clogs the abrasive hence giving it a short life but by running the vacuum extraction through the abrasive & block you are drawing air through them hence keeping the abrasive cool - it will last significantly longer - that is aside from the fact that when I undertake a body restoration on a vehicle anything between 10kg - 25kg of paint & filler dust end up in the vacuum - that's 10kg - 25kg of dust that you are not sweeping up / breathing in / cleaning off etc - the vacuum / dust extraction is well worth the effort |
