A local car mechanic suggested valve stem oil seals? Sounds like it could be steam seals. Any smoke on acceleration or any other scenario?

That does sound like the valve stem seals. They can also produce a short burst of smoke after idling for a while and also during engine braking for longer periods - eg going downhill.
The frustrating bit is that they are pennies worth of parts but a fair bit of work.
The reason for the smoke on starting is that oil is seeping past the stem seals overnight. You may find the back of the valves has some crusty bits of burnt oil on them so it's worth cleaning and lapping the valves whilst doing the job.

Hi, It does sound like valve guides or stem seals with smoke on start up. If you have the engine under power going along the road, then back off and then back on the power again and you get a smoke burst behind you then it's rings.
