I have an electrical soldering iron but my garage is abit too far to run an extension lead to without someone tripping over it.
Does anyone have any experience with the gas or battery powered soldering irons?

Ditto the above, get an extension or do your soldering indoors.

I have always used gas with no problem but you get what you pay for, the tips do wear out after a while so its worth getting a good make so you can get spares, you may struggle on the heavier stuff but for general car work you shouldn't have a problem

I use a gas one all the time, never had a problem, just buy a decent quality one. I've had people come to me & say that their gas one is messing about, generally that's due to your can of gas running out & just having propellant left but no gas, if you turn it one & drain the gas, then buy a new can of gas & refill it it'll cure the problems.

I've had a snap on gas soldering iron for years now and it's been really handy It's probably the same as a 40w electric one so will depend on what your soldering
I try to use a 240v soldering iron whenever possible as they are better but that's a good option

I'm not the worlds best solderer but I've had good results using a gas soldering iron from Maplins (although i think they're just closed down).....

Gas are fine mate. We use them at work as there's rarely a socket within easy distance.

I only need it for doing abit of light soldering to the wiring loom.
Any recommendations?

I'd get heatshrink solder joints, all you need is a small blowtorch or even a lighter.
