A friend at work would really like a VW bus, older the better, but has asked if there's anything cheaper but still retro?
She's searching eBay, but I wondered if there were any specific forums you knew of to view?
Any help gratefully received

Bedford CF. Tell her to google what happens if you crash a VW bus. They make everything else look like a NCAP5*..... James

I have had a CF in the past. It was a good simple vehicle but only did 16 MPG! They do have a good forum though. I now have a 25 year old Talbot express and cant fault it apart from 50MPH flatout I feel VW's are good but over priced. Its all down to budgeted what you need

The thing about Commer vans is difficulty of repair - isn't there like just one guy in birmingham that does bodywork for them? My vote would be a late 70s/early 80s Toyota HiAce - all the function with none of the oil-leaks, oil burning, petrol-smell-inside type stuff you get with a VW, and generally just more reliable. And cheaper because the VW Scene tax inflates the value of some pretty terrible vans. I had a VW T25 Westfalia aircooled and though lovely it was so expensive to run. And it got stolen because of it's desirability. (after an new engine ach) More modern people tend to go for Mazda / Ford Friendee Bongos, though I hear they are thirsty, not that pretty and don't look that big to me for camping. For the best function, I think that proper body-on-chassis camper like a Hymer is a good bet. They're not too pretty but often have solid Mercedes underpinnings (the one pictured is Citroen) , and I think with a bit of clever custom paint / details could look really smart.

My own camper. It's almost packed for a 10 day 3500km round trip at the start of June. It's small but we have everything on board for comfortable camping

I also had a diesel Bongo for 5 years and couldn't fault it. We used it as a day van / people carrier 22 MPG around town 30 on a run with 6 people full roof rack and box. Fit a low coolant alarm and temp gage from here www.coolantalarm.co.uk/shop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=3Rust proof it as they are not rust proved when new. If its compact you want they are excellent but very tight for space as you have to go out to set the bed up or look for a pop top one. Rear wheel arches rust and the head goes if it runs out of coolant hence the link above in 5 years I only had a new Rad only sold it for a motor home

How about a Renault Estafette? Just as slow as a VW, but possibly more reliable? Much much cheaper though and a few body styles to choose from. Just make sure you buy one with a log book though 😉

I bought this yesterday, needed to be a small wheelbase to keep the boat fares down living on the isle of Wight. Mk3 transits are still relatively cheap as they don't have as much as a following as the earlier vans but I love the shape of the mk3 so it's perfect for me!

Space to work, why don't I have space to work!!!!!!! Well my Hiace was registered in early 73, so it can't be the only one. 12R consumables are still available from Toyota, but swapping in the 18R is decidedly not an easy job having spoken to someone who did it. Van specific bits like ball joints are unobtanium though, even in Australia now. Out of all the old J vans, the Urvan/Homy is my favourite. They're just that little bit less agricultural than the Toyota.

It's small but we have everything on board for comfortable camping Second the Delcia, just back from France, camping in ours. We live in a big tent and sleep on a proper mattress in the Delcia. Then we went up here. And then we did this.

Not as retro as some but we bought a 1999 Toyota Granvia converted to a camper end of last year and we love it 👍🏻

I was in the market for a t25 but couldn't find anything that was much better than scrap for under 4k. settled for the mitsubishi l300 I found on ebay and am glad I did not seen another one since I've owned it, done a 208 mile round trip without skipping a beat last week end on £30 worth of petrol.
