A year or so ago I disconnected the speedo in my Midget because it was reading 120mph when I was crawling along and making the most insane screaming sound.
I was told it was a worn part and that it could be repaired, does anyone know much about speedos? It's a Smiths one and it'd be good to get it sorted. If I took it apart I wouldn't know what was worn and what wasn't.

I would try a good greasing job first before you start changing parts.

I would try a good greasing job first before you start changing parts. That's probably part of the issue. You don't grease speedos and a lot of the time issues with them are caused by oil tracking up the cable into the speedo head. Treat it like a mantle clock. It needs to be spotlessly clean with a minute drop of lube on the working parts. I'd wager the drive magnets are gummed up and dragging the needle round ruthlessly. That said these those speedo heads are plentiful and easily matched up as they have the gearing coding printed onto the speedo face.

Maybe I should explain a bit more. I had to do with a Renault R4 where the speedo acted normal until i reached 60 km/h or so when it suddenly started to scream and the needle went haywire and danced between zero and 120 even when slowing down until you came to a complete stop. I opened the speedo which was dry inside like a desert. I found some crumbles in the corner which were grease 40 years before. I cleaned everything thoroughly and greased the moving parts. I can't remember which kind of grease I used, but I did some research not to use something which harms the plastic gearing. The speedo worked fine afterwards and still does today.

Anything that is meant to be lubricated can be lubricated. What you initially suggested sounded like you were suggesting spraying it full of grease willy-nilly, which you appear to know yourself isn't a good idea.
