I called in one today, them and the other chains have a bad reputation, well I listened in to the first customer who had come to collect her car from being mot’d (bargain at £27.42) It passed with 2 advisories, rear bush and rear pads, she asked about the cost “ here we go I thought” £50 fitted for the pads and he told her not to worry about the bush as the tester is an . 2nd customer passed but a mention of low oil, he asked about the price to get it topped up, he got told to go to the supermarket and get a decent brand, top it up and he will have loads spare and it’s much cheaper. I was pleasantly surprised My turn next, I needed a rubber exhaust mount for the spiders back box and figured as they did exhausts it’s worth an ask. He went in the back and came back with something different but perfect for the job, it’s brand new but he wouldn’t charge me, I put a couple of quid in the box for their tea money.

Yeh, just shows you, obviously sometimes it’s the person behind the counter not the company logo over the door. He was a good guy by the sound of it

Have to say i used them for an MOT once and they passed it, but it really shouldn't have. Other than that I've not used them, they've not been very competitively priced when I've phoned for prices on tyres.

I used to live opposite one when I was just beginning to learn about cars (only 2 or so years ago). I popped in once or twice to ask stupid questions, and they always gave me really good advice and were happy to chat about things generally, despite not getting my immediate business. They'd even pop out back and bring things back suggesting I try them. I've had spanners, cans of penetrating fluid, spark plugs, free puncture repairs, even a small blowtorch for getting out seized bolts. Never asked for a penny. Highly recommended! (I now stick the daily in with them for MOTs as they've been so good.)

I think it depends on the whether the person behind the counter is a ‘car’ person, or just a company person only interested in targets.
Used to be a large Halfords in Aylesbury, just after they got bought out by Boots ( yes the Chemist) and they turned into Lifestyle stores rather than a good pkace to get car stuff , there was one member of staff who was a proper car bloke, knew the parts list like the back of his hand, very helpful, always ready to give advice etc .. he left, everyone else was clueless .... in fact I purposefully used to go and ask for Handbrake shoes for a 2 1/4L Land Rover Series 3 109 hardtop ....... ( they didn’t stock them) ... one spotty oik tried to convince me i meant a Discovery.......

I have always had good service whenever I've used a National. They seem to be much more switched on than the usual chains. I remember I took my Mini's exhaust off on a carpark speedbump and the local National sorted it and wouldn't take a thing for the new mounts "Because we like your car mate!". I took them a tub of chocolates in later that afternoon. Shame I don't live there anymore...
