Hi there, should have shared some pics years ago but never got around to it. Well here is a little bit about me and my cars. I have been gradually restoring a BMW 1502 over the last 15 years or so and the more I did to it to keep it original the less I felt like modifying it. What I have ended up with is a beautiful car though so no complaints really. I have however always been interested in modified old cars, my first car at 17 was a 66 Hillman Minx that I lowered 3”, nosed, decked and shaved and painted sky blue with salmon pink scallops. It was the early nighties and pastels were very much in. I’ve since owned a 68 Morris Oxford and a Mk1 Ford Transit camper van. That pretty much takes me up to when I got the BMW, apart from a a dry period when I was the not so proud owner of a montego, then a Mondeo estate and then a seat Ibiza. But it’s best not to think about them. Anyway back to the present day, I took my BMW out for a blast a few weeks back, first time since last summer, and had a great time which got me thinking that there must be other classics that were a laugh to drive and if I sold the BMW I could get another fun car, so I went home and put it on the internet to sell. Well it still hasn’t sold but last weekend a car popped up that looked too good to be true. A model of car that I’ve always liked but never really thought about getting in fact what I was really after was a Gilbert GT Well I’ve bought something on the opposite end of the scale to a little British sports car, I’ve bought a not so little British saloon car. A MK1 Ford Consul no less. Here are some pics

Thanks for the welcome A little about the Ford, the bodywork and interior is all as Ford intended however the engine and gearbox have been slightly updated, it now has a 2 litre Zetec and a 5 speed gearbox. All the modifications were done by the guy the last owner bought it off and as far as I can tell he has done a cracking job. There is a little bit of me that wishes I could say that I built it but there’s also a large part of me that thinks it would have taken me years To get to this point, that’s even if I could. It’s a massive smile inducer that’s for sure, I’ve spent the last few days in pretty much second and third gear grinning from ear to ear. Things to do to make it more to my tastes. I’ve already removed the peep mirrors as I thought 1 pair of mirrors are quite enough. I’m going to get some sound deadening for the interior as it’s pretty loud. I live in West Wales so I have to travel a fair distance if I want to go to any events and I think the noise, although pretty great for bombing around the lanes, would get pretty tiring after a while. Remove the modern stereo and shelf speakers and replace with an amp and hidden speakers. If anyone can recommend an amp that has an aux lead or bluetooth I would very much appreciate it, I’ve found one but some options are always nice. I only really listen to music off my phone when driving so I’ve no need for a head unit and this will keep it looking more period too. I want to find out what colour the original carpets would have been and get a set, there’s some home made ones in there at the moment and although a very good job has been done I’m going to have to rip them out for the sound deadening. The wheels on it are widened mondeo steels which I will either change for solid steels or in the meantime while I save some money get them powder coated black I’ve also got to get a spare as there isn’t one at the moment. The windscreen is leaking but the rubber doesn’t look perished so I’ll have to investigate that Turns out the fuel gauge is a bit of a fibber too so that’ll need fixing, yes I did run out of fuel. One of the previous owners had sprayed the dash silver, I’ve removed the silver paint so it’s now it’s original colour, same as the bodywork. Here are a couple of videos that the previous owner made and a photo of the engine and the distinctly non period speakers.

Rather like this, I have a soft spot for MK1s having had a 289 powered Mk1 ZZ, and contemplated a ratty build with a turbo wankel power, and monocoque wheels not that long ago..... BOOKMARKED

very nice car...and so well put together.
I can see where those speakers have to make a quick exit, and like the idea of hidden ones.
that motor looks very much at home in the engine bay....

JP It’s very well put together, and pretty quick too. I like a good stereo in a car they just don’t look right in old cars hence me wanting to hide things as much as possible. Other things that need doing are there seems to be some fumes leaking in from somewhere and I’ll probably fit some seat belts at some point. Little cosmetic things too like a new gear knob, it’s got an 8 ball 🎱 one on there at the moment. Theres a few bits that could do with rechroming like the door handles but I quite like the honesty of them so might leave them.

Luckily it’s the little things in life that can be the most pleasing. New gear shift knob to replace the 8 ball one it came with.

Wow, love it & think those cream wheels & hubcaps look perfect. New shift knob looks to have plenty of character without the cliche of 8-ball. Might be interesting to see with mild custom smoothing like no bumper over-riders, flush tail-lights, & makes me wonder if they all had the fussy features stamped in the bootlid over the number plate & why Ford didn't mount the bumpers higher for a lighter look. Can see why you'd be after more discreet sound system, doesn't look to need much more!

I’m a big fan of mild customs myself and would usually completely agree with you but in saying that I do like how standard this looks, even down to the AA badge on the front. Once I get a bit of spare cash I might splash out on some solid steels as I think the ones on there look a little modern and originally they would have been solid. I’ll just put 15” ones on instead of 13”. Also I think I might paint or powder-coat then black and add trim rings. I’ve got some sound deadening for the interior so just got to find a Bluetooth amp and some decent speakers, oh and some carpets. More find the money to buy them than physically find them. Although I am struggling to find a Bluetooth amp.

It’s been a while since I last posted, since the last post it’s had the wheels painted and been on a revolving plinth at the Silverstone Classic. Those are the good things, the not so good things are I bought some decent sticky tires for it. Great you might think, way more fun around the lanes of west Wales, that’s what I thought at least. Turns out they weren’t so good for the back axle and promptly destroyed every bit of it. The diff, the half shafts, the CROWN and pinion, pretty much all of it. Before this happened I saved some cash and bought a throttle body kit for it, so I then had to save some more money over winter for the new bits for the axle, LSD, custom made half shafts, you know, all the expensive bits. It has been at Body and Soul Autoworks in Cardiff, who I can’t praise enough for their patience, since May getting fixed and today I had some pictures back of the engine so I thought I would share

Very nice car. The engine bay looks a lot nicer without the plastic black top rocker cover. BD version is a must with a zetec. As a fellow West Wales dweller I agree with the quality of the lanes round here.

As a fellow West Wales dweller I agree with the quality of the lanes round here. It’s amazing how much it fills the engine bay now. It was quite a squeeze by all accounts. Also looks a little more like an old engine now, which is nice
