After this afternoons fun - Why on earth is the access panel in the floor of my ford mondeo smaller than the in-tank pump? Seriously, you can't remove the pump without either dropping the tank or hacking into the floor, ridiculous design!

XJ Cherokee- Why is the boot striker secured by nuts that are under the floor behind the bumper making adjustment very difficult and why are the bumpers secured to the brackets with bolts that go into spire nuts/speed clips so that they instantly snap and spin when you want to remove them?

Vauxhall Vectra B - why use 2 inch torx bolts in the most inaccessible place to mount the front bumper when bolts half the length would suffice, and one with a hex head even more so? And on the subject of torx bolts, same car, same bolts to mount the seat in also with copious amount of thread lock? They very rarely come out without stripping the head or snapping the bit.

Seriously, you can't remove the pump without either dropping the tank or hacking into the floor, ridiculous design! This is a common complaint and not just on the Mondeo! At least it has a hole, the Focus (and many others) don't! And on the Saab 93, the access hole is not only too small, but is in completely the wrong position! Though this is a legacy from the Cavalier floor pan the Saab uses! The answer to any question that starts with "Why don't they........?" is COST!!!!!! Cynical but true! Cars are not "designed" (I use the word loosely) to be worked on at all, any "designing" done is purely to reduce production cost! Steve |

Lexus...with all the advanced electrics on the LS 400's, why do I have to push a button to fold the mirrors?Even my Fiesta does that automatically  |

firstly great thread idea!
pug 106 desiger... why give a really compact little car door mirrors that stick out like the kid in the class with "wing-nut" ears and makes the car about half as wide again???

I can’t remember the exact model but when I was a kid during the school holidays I worked in a garage and I helped them replace (Bodge) the camshaft and it wouldn’t slide out without it fowling the bulkhead or slam panel.
As a fix (Bodge) they gave me a hammer and chisel to make a hole in the bulkhead to slide the camshaft into the interior of the car!🙈
Once completed the hole was repaired with the local gazette paper!
I blame the designer. Oh the shame.

Dear Herr Doctor Porsche... so ol' Adolf wanted the Kraft Durch Freude Wagen to be small and compact, but why choose to fit all three pedals into a space barely suited for two? And then what act of malevolence led you to offset them by six inches? So, I use my left foot for the clutch, my middle foot for the brake/throttle but then there's nowhere to store my right foot. And to get that onto either the brake or gas I need an extra knee joint that swivels my lower leg over at 45 degrees. And then I have to walk around like a crab, sideways, when I get out because my hips have twisted round back to front  Seriously, did you never actually see what shape human beings are before you designed that? Even Germans have one leg on either side and both of them hang down from the bottom  |

As mentioned in another thread Ford OHC six as fitted to Falcons from EA onward. What fool put the alternator directly beneath the power steering pump so it can drown in leaking power steering oil and the distributor so far up under the inlet manifold as to be unreachable by a normal human?

Dear Subaru / Fuji Heavy Industries Designer Person
I love your boxy AWD estate car very much.
I also love the sporty frameless windows, normally found only on convertibles, coupés and muscle cars.
However, is there a way you can fix it so that the slightly inadequte window-seals don't swamp the cabin with wind noise at any speed over about 55mph?

The (my) Escort mk3...
1) Why every time it rains and i open the boot, did they design it so all water runs off the boot lid into your stuff inside!!!
2) water continued... Why did they design the car so water can sit in the battery tray, fuse box, door cills, doors, rear lights!
3) Why did you make the gear linkage so awful !
4) Why the worst metal out!
4) And lastly (which i guess answers all the above) Why were Ford so tight which making this car!!
I own a "popular" and so i don't expect much at all but, back in the day the early 80s ones didn't get parcel shelfs, headrests, centre console vents, no 3 speed fan switch, anti roll bars... of course no stereo.
I mean it was supposed to be better than the mk2 right? haha!
I still love it though!! Great thread btw!!
p.s. my two cents on the Focus mk1... why do you have to take the battery off to replace the headlight bulb? I'm not sure how that would work for most people.
