I picked this up from @grumpynortherner yesterday at the restoration show at the NEC, good to meet you, hope your glitzy awards ceremony went well. The plan is to have a building type project to do with my train-mad son as I’ve not quite swung him over onto the car side of things yet. First up how it came... Impressive condition for a 39 year old “toy” - same vintage as myself - and a lot better condition than I am! To plan the route through the garden we needed to see what arc was needed to turn it through 90 degrees. Each track section has two different lengths so alternating gives a straight, relevant lengths together give an inner or outer curve making it completely flexible. The table is there to support it while checking - fence posts will be concreted in at regular intervals down that full length of that border with the track mounted to a board covered in shed roof felt on top of the fence posts. We then built the track to follow the other section of the wall... I need to build a gate (in two sections) with track on top to fill that gap between the walls... A test run of the train will be next but I need to buy some SAE90 oil for lubrication before we attempt that! It runs for 8 minutes between each fuel/water refill and oil top up so I can see a summer of nagging every 8 minutes unless you can buy fuel tank / water tank extensions!

I'd love a garden railway, but mine would be a R/C conversion of a Lego train set (running on the new non-conduction track).

My father bought myself and 2 brothers one of these for Christmas many moons ago. I'm 44 now so this must have been around 1980. This s a real blast from the past. I remember him setting the track up in the living room and watching it go round in a circle. For some reason he sent it back to the shop. I can't remember if it broke or not.
It'll be good to see this going though

Cool 'toy'! If you haven't already seen it, you might want to check out Keith Appleton on youtube, www.youtube.com/user/keithappleton - he does a lot of engineering / building / restoration on model steam engines and trains.

I've been involved in some big collaborative indoor train layouts. Part of the fun would be rebuilding it every so often, for outdoor buildings glue might be appropriate.

Awesome! My dad has one of these stowed away. I remember one of the carriages went missing where it was stored in my grans attic after some builders redid the insulation. Pretty annoying.
I've always wondered what it would go like since I was a kid, be great to see some vids of it up and running!

Too bad about the missing carriages, don’t know how workmen could blatantly take things from houses they work in. Hopefully a video of this spurs you on to get your dad’s out and running.

Track circuit signalling? Or token block? Loving this. I've a soft spot for the Rocket... after all, the first commercial railway launch, the first rail fatality. No less a luminary than Lord Huskisson the ex-Home Secretary who should not have even been at the event having recently recovered from surgery following an illness of the kidneys. Legendarily clumsy, he'd also broken his arm at least twice previously and never regained full use of it. Thus, having crossed the track to make peace with the Duke of Wellington in a coach pulled by the Northumberland (not a man you really wanted to be falling out with) he really should have reacted more quickly to the cry of "An engine is approaching. Take care, gentlemen!" Instead, caught in two minds and dithering, the Rocket hit him as he hung half-in and half-out of the carriage door, smashing both the door and his legs. He died later that day as a field amputation was deemed "too dangerous" Lucky guy... two working locomotives in the world and he was hit by both of them Hopefully the worst victim of the garden Rocket will be the odd slow sparrow

Love the track on the wall. Looks like slab track we use on viaducts and tunnels. Hope you buying a tamper and rail grinder as well. Otherwise this is what you get...
