I'm not kidding guys, I am seeing myself in a lot of these car graveyard type videos you see on youtube! Unfortunately I don't have the pre-requisite acre or 2 that is required to have a serious stash, otherwise, it would be dangerous I've got 4 camped out at a relatives property at the moment, and could easily have turned down another 4 in the last 2 months if I'd had the space. My theory is every one saved from the scrappies is a good thing, as the way they butcher old cars still is a crime imho. I am actively looking for that magical sanctuary to properly store under cover some old timers before they rust into the ground in others hands. Are there any car hoarders on here, and if so, how many vehicles do you have (any particular makes/models?) and how have you got them stored?

Given a chance (and the said space) I reckon I would be a hoarder! For a start, most of the cars I have owned had to be sold to make space for its replacement which is sad Your best bet is to marry a female farmer & boot the cows outta the barn

I promise you that you really don't want to become a car hoarder. It is really much worse than you think!

I become a car hoarder the day I took out my first trade insurance
I don't have a trade policy anymore but I still have an obsession with owning cars Fortunately I'm limited by space and money
I've currently got 10 Jag xj12 Volvo 940 Volvo 240 BMW e36 x2 BMW e34 BMW e39 Mazda 323 Fiesta VW bay window
Given space and money I'd buy more

Why waste the possibilites of barns with livestock or hay for example? I am in the same position as you re moving some on to be able to buy others. As a properly equipped hoarder that wouldn't be necessary.

Other than my daily I’ve currently got 5 “retro’s” on fleet and none are roadworthy,I did have a couple more but sold them on.
I usually slate hoarders for leaving cars sitting to rot but In reality that’s all I’m doing. I’ve convinced myself in my head that all get around to sorting them allout one day but I doubt I will. The problem is I can’t bare to part with any of them as they’re all cars are dreamed to own when I was younger and managed to scoop them all cheap before prices went through the roof. The scary thing is I still look through eBay, Facebook, gumtree etc trying to find more but luckily lack of money stops me buying them otherwise I probably would have acres of cars rotting.

I currently have eight cars of my own plus my wife's car, a tractor, and the rolling carcass of an 11m Mercedes Benz bus on our rural small holding and another car which I haven't driven since the '80s in the garage I built at my parents' farm over 1000 miles away. I have a tendency to buy replacement cars, often the same model as their predecessor, and not sell on the old ones. Of the eight one is legal and used daily, one is in regular use around the property but will never be legal again, two are saveable projects that go, and the others, realistically, are parts cars only. It is likely that if I lived alone the number of cars would increase alarmingly. I really need more sheds. Don't we all? Some people collect stamps or coins and this isn't considered crazy.
Edit; no moderns here. The newest vehicle we have is from 1991. Our dailies are both from 1990.

I can see the attraction but I sincerely hope that none of you go down the route of filling a field full of cars that you intend to save has it normally results in quite the reverse happening - in all of the 40+ years that I have been involved in owning & restoring classics and despite the best initial intentions of the hoarders I have never seen anything of much good get dragged back out of fields full of rotting classics -they are normally too far gone or have little to offer in the form of usable spares. Nothing wrong in owning several motors (I have 6 retro / classics 3 of which are projects) then there is the odd one that passes through where I step in to ensure the future of the car but it's next to pointless filling land with motors that you cannot realistically find or offer a future for.

I’ve got about 14 or so. More than half of these were solely bought with the intention of being donors for various other transient visitors and I run a reasonably cost neutral daily driver system so it seems to work OK. However my driveway and yard is becoming almost impossible to move now. Need to get some of the least together ones finally stripped of anything good remaining and free up space.

But if done sensibly and well stored isn't a hoarder automatically upgraded to be a collector? I see you point there, but I'm going to say no, not really. Unless by sensibly and well stored you're talking about some kind of climatically controlled whorehouse then really, you're just a horder. I'm 17 cars in (down from 20 this time last year!) and I like to kid myself that I am a collector. My 'collection' includes some pretty cool stuff, '68 Barracuda, '80 Trans Am, '32 Ford RPU replica, '79 Volvo 262C, '79 Celeste, '77 Celica liftback, '05 Mustang to name but a few. But only two of these seven are on the road, the rest are waiting their turn, whenever that might come! Of the other ten only three are on the road! So over all thats less than a third. The other two thirds are costing me an arm and a leg in storage in damp garages and lock ups! Honestly every time I sell a car and give up a garage i feel a sense of relief! However, if you feel that this is something that might bring you happiness, try it. Rent a big storage space and fill it, when I had all twenty cars parked together I must admit I thought it was kinda cool. But for me, reality set in, and its just kinda became a big pain in the bum!

"14 or so" sounds like you've got quite a stash there! Are all the cars outside? Providing some sort of long term cover for cars where there's no chance of being tucked up inside a nice barn/garage seems the ongoing issue. I saw a guy a while ago that has had this in his front driveway for c. 10 years. Not sure I'd bother with the tarp. If the roof was tin sheets it may be quicker/easier to make. Having cars is one thing, storing them as best as you can is another.

The most my dad and I ever had was 10. When you get to that number you soon realise that you don't know what to do first. Then it just snowballs from there on.

Let's put it this way, only a few will ever be restored due to financial and time constraints. I'm just looking to save others from a last trip down to the scrappies as too many good cars are getting crushed for pennies.

I see what you're saying, but if only a few will ever be restored due to financial and time constraints, aren't you just prolonging the agony for the others before they inevitably either get reclaimed by mother nature, or the scrapman gets them?

I'd echo what the people above have said - unless you can store them all well, you'll probably end up not having the time to do any of the things you want. Personally, I've got 6 - all MOTd, taxed and insured - and think it's too many. All mine live undercover (except one which will do soon) and I am forever finding more things that need to be done. I'd say it's best to own a few great cars than loads of curse word ones

Have a barn which is cool and dry, 4 of them sit in there (MK2 Golf, 205 GTI, E36 Convertible and the MK4 Golf parts onor for the MK2. Everything else is outside as they are ongoing projects and all late nineties onwards so no real chance of rust

I am a little bit of a neat freak and hording things would not work for me. Having a big shed with lots of clean cars (doesn't need to be perfect) would be OK. My land is just over an acre. I have 1 BMW parked in the back. Just sits there in the yard. I hate it. It's messy. I have another BMW parked at my cousins. It's been there for about 5 years. I know it's nice and dry in the shed. I haven't seen that car in the last 2 or 3 years.

I'd only do it if I had a proper storage facility. none of this leaving them out in the weather nonsense.
But the most I've had is 2 concurrent cars. Both running and driving and registered.. It cost me too much money, as I was only an apprentice.

I'd fence off an area so the hoard can't be seen - let's say 100 x 100 ft, get the land prepped, and get busy filling it!
