In light of these suggestion perhaps I am warming to the idea of using the 190e. Even with a new exhaust and couple of bits of welding which I must do when I get a moment and a sunny weekend afternoon, it would still owe me less than my £700 budget. And I own it already!! Best idea IMHO; you'll also have a better car at the end of it too! The grass is always greener on the other side...

I’ve done 2 trips from Brighton up to Scotland / the Highlands. Both really big adventures for me. Just from my experience, the planning and prep I put into my second trip made it far more enjoyable than the first one (just drove north). Researching roads and routes beforehand, planning alternatives if the weather is curse word, seeing where others have gone etc paid off more than having the ‘right’ car. In a way, the right road will make the wrong car far more enjoyable than the other way round. There’s so many variables – weather, road closures, car clubs hitting the hot spots en mass, caravanners, the weather...did I mention that already!? You’re better off in a barge with a good set of routes to explore than a race-ready Puma and a foggy mountain pass! At least that’s how I see it. All of your suggestions should be fun for the trip. I think you might struggle to get a few in budget, at least in a condition to make 1500 miles. As others have said there’s quite a few bumpy roads so nothing stiff or low. Depending on skills / how remote you’re going / whether you’re in a convoy, definitely consider reliability. You’re not likely to die in the wilderness but a knackered car can ruin a good trip. Sometimes it’s better to go with something you know will make it home even if it doesn't sound as exciting. Out of options I’d probably opt for an MR2 if you could find one that’s not crusty around the rear. Good power band, alright as a cruiser and fairly reliable. My trip last year was done on a budget of £1500. I bought a MK3 Supra for £800ish and spent the rest repairing it. Covered 2200 miles over a long weekend. Blew a radiator pipe and replaced the shocks along the way. I took my chances and they didn’t hold out! Otherwise it was a good road trip buddy, especially as it'd been laid up for years. Split the boring journey up to Scotland by collecting ebay purchases along the way. All various Supra spares (inc shocks) that came in handy. She's still going strong.
