Trying to get to the bottom of things and wondering if someone could give me their take on issues.
Last couple of days, I've noticed the temp guage go up quickly when the engine's revving above 2500rpm. Can manage it but have to drive super slow.
Fair bit of steamy smoke coming out the back now. Figured it might be the cold weather though - only noticed it the last couple of weeks.
No coolant loss, no mayo in the oil, fan works. Haven't checked the water pump or stat.
Should do a compression test now I think about it.
But otherwise, what do people think? Does that sound like the head gasket on it's way out or gone even?

Sounds more like the impeller has fallen off the water pump. I'll have a look not ideal timing for it to happen given the weather. Flipping engines.

Hi, Possibly main radiator partially blocked, check it for cold spots when it's up to temperature.

Has it coincided with the very cold weather and whats your anti-freeze mix like?
I had similar in an old Scirocco i picked up during a cold snap many years ago, though i'd bough a wrong 'un but it turned out it was ice forming in the bottom hose due to a weak anti-freeze mix and blocking/fooling the stat.. (only found it by chance squeezing the hoses to make sure i didn't have an air lock and the bottom hose which leads to the stat and water pump was 'crunchy)

Update to this - emptied the coolant - it was barely a litre.
Checked the oil under the filler cap - no gunge or mayo.
Tried to refill, accepted about a litre.
I'm thinking blockage perhaps.

I wouldn't of thought it would be the piping, unless it crumbled in your hand
Have you tried backflushing the system with a hose and / or removing the stat?
Also do you know what capacity the cooling system is?

Also do you know what capacity the cooling system is? Supposed to be 4.9 litres apparently. Hence why emptying a litre but then only being able to fill a litre seemed odd. I think flush will be the next job.

I recently did a timing belt, waterpump and thermostat on a mates TDI Passat that had had only water in it for 2 years due to a leak First thing I did was remove the stat, back together with fresh water and caustic soda drain cleaner. Run up to temperature. Drain, flush with hose pipe and repeat another 2 times. Should have seen the rusty curse word come out. This is a 11 year old car. I flushed it with clean water a good few times to make sure all the soda was gone, and refill with astronomy mix of coolant. Car has been fine since , and a much improved heater and new rad means no water loss either. Worth a go.

Old hoses are always hit ad miss. Likewise with old water pumps. Ive see a <2year old water pump fail and throw off the cam belt because raw water was used in the cooling system

Update as I had to go away on holiday.
Gave the cooling system a flush out - noticeable blockages, the water pump and thermostat are fine. The rad isn't blocked.
Any ideas on a next step?
Also, is universal radiator hose a decent replacement for original shaped hoses? Just checking as I decided to change the old hoses as they were a bit decrepit.

crunchy hoses are usually just a layer of crud on the inside. You don;t say what engine your have but i know the old E13 engine was notorious for the head cracking.

Update to my update - so having stripped off the water pump, thermostat, radiator, hoses off the radiator, and the intake manifold, and given everything a check and good flush, I put everything back together.
The water pump was replaced as I couldn't get a single gasket, so had to order a new pump kit - figured it worth installing.
Replaced the heater hoses as well.
Seems to run fine again. I didn't notice any significant blockages - bit of residue in the flushed coolant but nothing major.
The old water pump seems fine as well.
Who knows! At least it's all working again now and the opportunity to tighten up the carb set-up means the car runs a lot nicer now.
Cheers for all your suggestions!
