Shame really, it's in very good condition, but I'm sure he hasn't paid the garage rent for a while now. And he's disappeared into Eire.

Hi, A couple of reasons spring to mind. Firstly the vehicle is not theirs to sell. Secondly as far as they're concerned it has little or no value, despite what we may think. If they did sell it and the previous owner or registered keeper turns up and wants their vehicle back who is going to bear the cost or loss of that? Think about it from both sides if you were the original or new owner. To forestall all of that it's easier for them to crush it and not have to sort it out because the vehicle doesn't exist anymore.

Didn't someone do this with an Escort Cosworth once, and it turned out it had been left as the owner was doing a bit of bird, and when he came out he wasn't best pleased when he came out? 99% of the time there is going to be a good reason a car hasn't turned a wheel, mine hasn't moved in 18 months, it's broke and I haven't got time to fix it as yet but I've already had 2 builder's offer to take it away for me... It's locked up tight and luckily a hiab isn't getting near my driveway

If i'm not mistaken there are various statutes which award councils with the power to remove and destroy abandoned vehicles, therefore they have every right to crush an abandoned car after leaving notices on it. The idea of selling them will cost more than disposing of them and create liability for selling cars with no keys/papers/unroadworthy condition. Reality is 99 percent of abandoned cars are rubbish not worth saving. If you happen to come across the 1% worth saving you can save it yourself before the council take it (but you damn well better make sure it's actually abandoned!) by informing the police of the situation, attempt to track the owner, remove it and inform police you are doing so, v62 and see what happens. Supposedly Cannot be considered theft as you have informed the police so shown no intention to permanently deprive the true owner, but in reality if its left on the road with no tax the owner likely doesn't give a toss anyway.

I would just move it for "safe keeping" on his behalf.... its not like its just any old car on the side of the road!

Mantas are very cool. I'd have cut the lock off the garage and saced the car if I was you. Like I said, the owner probably doesn't care, its too nice to let the council squash it so please save it. To cover yourself when doing the V62 don't leave a trail back to yourself in terms of the address ect. If he comes round asking about the car one day say you took it to stop the council crushing it, it's really not that hard!
