Hello guys I have a old r129 merc and after the car standing for over 6 years I have bought the car on the road and was going to do a service but, the sump nut is so hard to get off i have used a socket and a rachet spanner but still nothing, I have soaked it in WD-40 but still had no result so sprayed loads more and left it, I tapped it gently with a hammer so see if I could loosen any rust on the threads but still nothing l, I didn't attempt the fuel filter nuts but they did look rather rusty to so again sprayed loads of WD-40 and left it, so is there anything else I can do to make these nuts easier to remove, all help is greatly appreciated

The sump plug will be tight as it's a steel bolt into a alloy pan, use a 1/2" socket on a breaker bar and it will crack loose.
The fuel filter should have a nut built into one end of the fuel filter that you can hold with a large spanner, then simply undo the banjo fittings either end.

I have had to resort to a scaffold pole on the end of a breaker bar to crack a sump nut in the past...

They respond best to a sharp snatch of the bar too rather than sustained torque. A swift curse word with a lump hammer on the tool may well work.

I did think of a bar but was worried about damaging the sump, but will try that I think a few more days of wd-40 just to let it soak through, what's are the chances of it messing it up lol

WD40 is pretty much useless in this situation, plus gas is much better. If you've got access to ATF and acetone/thinners, you can mix them 50:50 to make an awesome release agent.

I see, how about using a heat gun on the sump nut will that be any good?

On the sump would be better but not too much if it's alloy.

I second this - I have found very few bolts/nuts that PlusGas won't release. On the odd occasion it doesn't work I have found that a good application of PlusGas followed immediately by a spray of WD40 (or even just Wilko's cheap alternative) does the job. WD40 is primarily a dispersant rather than a lubricant so it seems to drive the PlusGas into the joint. |

Hello guys after soaking the nuts in wd4o and this morning using some plus gas the sump nut opened with ease, I put plus gas on the fuel filter bonjo nut and its stiff so did a 50/50 acetone and ATF so will have a go in the morning again, hope fully it opens

Lol so I'm back again and the results I have are that , WD-40, plus gas , and acetone / atf mix, didn't work, and was stuck solid so had to undo the filter from.the coupling that connects to the bonjo nut, once the filter was off I put a ratchet spanner in the bonjo nut and a 1/2" socket on to the coupling nut, and still had no luck, so really don't know what I will have to do to take it off, I have fitted a new filter by connecting it to the old coupling, its seems ok and i checked for any leaks but it all seems fine, is there anything else I could you on the next service to get the bonjo nut off
