I wasn't sure where to put this so hopefully it will generate a few responses here.
I want to fit some sound deadening in my Mk2 Caddy van. I'm going to be boarding out the rear and would like an idea of what to put behind the boards but also fancy putting a bit more against the bulkhead and under the carpets. If anyone can offer advice on what's best to use I would be grateful.
Cheers,
Sammo

Dynomat is the first thing that comes to mind, not cheap but worth it.

Ideally you'd use the following. For cutting out sound you'd use some MLV mat. Where you have areas of resonant panels you'd use your typical sound deadening foil/butyl based deadening. I'd recommend Skinz these days for deadening. FWIW I've tried a few variants of deadening and here is my opinion. -SecondSkin Damplifier Pro : This stuff is amazing. It's very easy to apply, has good adhesion properties and it does make a nice difference with even on layer. This is now tricky to get hold of. I have a 10 year old pack now and it still somehow sticks really well everywhere. It’s awesome stuff -Dynamat Xtreme : This is almost as good as SSD. But it is more expensive. I've had a mate use this with 4 layers before. It was one way to make a Megane rattle free as well as very quiet inside, especially with a lot of audio inside it! -Dynamat Normal : It's not as good as DX but is a step up from Flashing Tape -Bodyline: This sticks as well as Flashing tape which is not very well). It's about as good as normal Dynamat -Flashing tape ; there are people who swear by this stuff. Me? I don’t. It doesn’t stick as well as the above, and often you need a heat gun before it even thinks of sticking well to a panel for the long term. Also, you’d need around 4 layers of flashing tape to one layer of DX or SSD. Yes it may be cheaper but you’ll spend more than 4 times longer fitting it and then possibly run into issues with panels going back on, and that’s if it stays stuck to the door for the long term. Are you feeling the love? Me neither. I used this in my Stag as I didn’t want to use my SSD; silly I know as I did throw it into my MX-5 eventually. While it did make a difference to where I put it I used a lot of layers, spent an age making it stick as well as cleaning panels cleaner than when the car left the Speke factory. I’ve also still had one layer of the proper products outperform it. The best people to speak to is Colin from Oxford Car Audio ; he specialises in Sound deadening. He’s available at www.sounddeadening.co.uk . He sells MLV and can advise or what to get. I almost got my RST sound deadening from them, but I sold the car ; my car lost all of its factory deadening bar the bitumen matting.

For the kind of products you use to reduce panel resonance - how much of the panel actually needs to be covered for it to be effective?

Don't waste your money - nip to your local builders merchant and buy self adhesive Flashband. A 10m long, 225mm deep roll will cost you around £40-£50 but it is every bit as good as Dynamat. I used it in my P100 build and it worked perfectly. (I work for a builders merchant so got it dirt cheap)

And I do agree with Chas - it isn't as easy to get it to stick but if you warm it up 1st, it's fine.

For the kind of products you use to reduce panel resonance - how much of the panel actually needs to be covered for it to be effective? Ideally all of it, but in reality you can get away with doing the thing and flat parts. It will be obvious which bits are OK and which aren't. For tackling road noise you need to cover the floorpan ideally but then there are better products out there for that like MLV.

I was looking into all this stuff recently and came across Silent Coat as a European (and cheaper) version of Dynamat. SilentOat

The better sound deadening products are Butyl based. It won't go hard like Bitumen and experience the same adhesion issues. I suspect the Dodo matt above is Butyl .
