Just Bought this little hot hatch this week, it has a genuine mileage of 20k from new trouble is I'm not sure if I should use it or not as it is a rare find, how manys left site says only 1 taxed and 3 sorn left I believe from what i have read on the internet this is a GTi that had the bhp reduced to 105bhp for the uk market and then badged as a GSXI the seats even have gti embossed in them and I have seen pics of one other with same trim, shes quick little thing and handles the road better than my old 206 GTI. Do I use it or store? mmm I also wonder what Daihatsu did to it to reduce the BHP

Use it or sell it, it's not going to be a desirable classic so no point locking it away.

I’d disagree Small j cars of the 80s are highly sort after 90s ones will follow That car will be wanted by an enthusiast soon Retro Rides is a good forum to show that car Good buy chap

Cool little rice rocket! I love my J tin and as MercDan said, it will be worth looking after but I personally couldn't own a car and not drive it. Plus with only 20k miles on it you've got a lot of miles to play with!

have 10k's worth of fun and shift it on...that's what I would do.

Just enjoy this great looking car. Can you park it in a garage or carport? If you can park it nice and dry I would keep it and enjoy when you could. Maybe not as a daily but on the other hand if you would put another 50.000 mile on it it will be still a low-ish mile car and you possibly will get your money back.

Thanks for your input guys, I really fancy running it tbh, i am so tempted to tune it up a bit but where do you get performance parts for mark IV Daihatsu Charades? do I have to get a custom made exhaust? i still wonder what Daihatsu did to it to reduce the power from 125 to 105 bhp for the uk market

There was one on ebay with a 4-1 manifold and full ss system last week, so the manifold must be available at least. I'd always have custom made exhaust though. J-spec stuff usually responds well to breathing mods as they have massively over silenced, small bore exhausts.

join the Daihatsu Perfomance Enthusiasts facebook page. will get some info. Performance parts are pretty rare tbh, plus daihatsus arent really flying up in value. The 30 year old GTti is no where near reaching renault 5 or J tin prices

In theory, to detune a car they would use a restrictor between carb & manifold but as yours is injection they might have just restricted the air flow. Get a 57i kit for something similar and get a custom made stainless zorst. Those should see the lost power back alone.

No ideas on the restriction but it is a lovely looking thing, might be worth getting it rolling roaded it might not be a restricted as you think.

Silly low miles. I'd preserve it to an extent but enjoy it. 90s J stuff is getting rarer and rustier now so in my view it's worth the extra care.

Lovely example of a car that was forgotten about way back when. Not the fastest 90s hot hatch but definetly one of the best handling. I have the J detomaso version for the past 4 years and its only now being parked up to have a full nut and bolt rebuild. I have trashed this car with no mercy over 80000 kms and It has never ever left me down. You were asking how they made the gtis slower? The J spec hde engine has a bigger camshaft. Thats the only difference. Brings bhp up to 127. Doesnt sound like much but they all have a close ratio 1st 2nd and 3rd gear so 60 is hit at 8 secs. Unfortunately Trying to find a deto camshaft will be like trying to find hens teeth. Best of luck with the car and take my advice.... DRIVE IT!!!
