I bought this Cavalier a few weeks ago, as I saw it advertised on facebook, and needed something to get me home from Stansted airport. The seller was local, and agreed to meet me when my flight landed. Beats using the train! You very rarely see any of these any longer, so I'm always interested in buying anything like this just to reminisce. It got me back from Stansted without a hitch, which is nearly 170 miles, and was surprisingly good on fuel. I put £30 in, and was doing around 90mph on the motorway, and there's still fuel left in now...even after forgetting it was running today, and leaving it ticking over for 2 hours. I can say with total confidence, that it doesn't overheat!
So, it is what it is. A cheap retro daily with a good chunk of MOT left. There was only 1 advisory with the MOT, which was a tyre getting close to the legal limit. Unlike most of these, the body is great, with no rust on the arches at all. The paint all seems to be original too. There are one or two minor bumper scuffs, and the thin trim on the bumpers has seen better days. The petrol filler cap has faded, and could do with painting, as could the wing mirrors if I'm being seriously fussy.
Mechanically, it seems great. Like I said, no problems with the drive home, and it's been sat in my unit since, and started today after 2 weeks. It fired fist time. The gearbox, brakes, clutch and steering all do what they should do. The wheels could do with a balance, as there's a faint wobble, mainly at around 50mph. The person I bought it off told me it had had a recent new clutch, but no paperwork to prove this.
The interior is nice enough, if not a little dull! The seats are all intact with no wear, as are the carpets. The roof lining has sagged a little towards the rear, and both the handbrake and gear gaitors are unpleasant and need replacing. The drivers door card has a nice piece of gaffer tape on it too, presuming this is hiding a split. Other than that, it's a nice, boring place to be. Oh, the passenger electric window doesn't work, and it has a manual sunroof.
I think that's about it. It's cheap enough, and a nice reliable retro.
Viewings, test drives and tyre kickers welcome.
