As you may have seen in my rides thread, I'm fitting a smiths speedo into my scimitar se6, which I have fitted a 2.9 oil burner and sprinter box. The box has a 2 wire output from the speedo sensor, so I assumed as the smiths unit will tolerate any sensor, I'd get it working ok. I've had no luck, so went and ordered a 3 wire sensor which I will have to mount on the prop or a hub. I have set the 3 wire jobbie up on a drill and it works well, but it means hassle to fit it. I'd really like to use the sprinter box sensor, but why won't it work?

Normally the sensor uses an input of 12 volt in order to operate, so its a 3 wire system. 12 volt positive wire negative wire and a pulse wire that goes to the speedometer, i don't know if 2 wire sensors take the nagative from the casing where its mounted on ? if thats the case you have a 12 volt positive wire and a pulse wire. don't know the specs from either but if the pulse frequency is a mismatch then things are not working to.

That's helpful collector, thanks. I'd not thought about how it works, but the earth through the body is obvious.......I will give it another shot. The wires from the sprinter box are brown and white, so the brown may be a live and the white the pulse.

the pulse wire is in most cases the white one indeed.

Well I've explored this more, and it's not playing ball, so I'm going to have to go with my new 3 wire sensor. Next thing.....where best to mount it? The back of the gearbox is the obvious, but to get to the box without dropping it or cutting the tunnel is not likely, it's tight in there I'm now wondering if to go on the diff end, but that means long and untidy wiring. Maybe on a front hub?

It needs to be mounted where there are bolts. The driveshaft mounting is one such area. But, wherever the reference is the bolts must be equal in distance around the circumference. If they are not the same distance the speedo will do very strange things as it will get confused by the odd signals as opposed to a constant signal.
I believe you can also use magnetic or reflective tape to make it work. So the input flange edge with the tape on it is another possibility.

Thanks chasR ! I did just that. Got it over the pit today, made a bracket and got it connected. It has an led that pulses each time it picks up, so it was easy to do once I'd welded a mount up. It's very secure and out of harms way where it is.....
