...because I want to waft into work on a lumbar supported, heated, digital wingback chair. I'm getting old and I miss my old E55 AMG W210. Shouldn't have crashed it, really. Looking at the sub-5k mark - initially was considering a 3.0V6 TDi Phaeton and equivalent A8 - but they're not flicking my switches and at that price range I imagine I could be in for a world of bills. Try as I might, I just can't get excited by a Jaaaaaaaaag. Can't put my finger on it, but I see them and just think 'meh'. I'm thinking possibly Lexus LS400 / LS430 (this one on evilbay looks tasty, maybe an old S-class (although again in my budget the early 2000s had pretty poor build quality. I do have a soft spot for Mercs, and the 3 door CL looks lurvely. Comfort and toys more important than all-out POWAAAAAH! Any suggestions?

Import a Toyota CROWN or Century for £5k you'll be able to do that and have it landed at that price.

I've had a couple of cheap luxobarges First was a Jaguar Sovereign 4.0 Was a lovely car, very wafty and comfortable. A bit old to be having some of the latest mod cons, but AC, cruise and a CD multichanger were nice to have. It did drink fuel at an amazing rate though.. The other one I've had was this BMW 750i, I got it for less than a grand which was entirely luck I think as I couldn't tell why it was so cheap. 5.4 V12, lots more electrical stuff than the Jag including heated seats, electric sun blind, sat nav, etc. etc. The V12 was surprisingly good on fuel for what it is, was better than the jag certainly. The E38's were built well and you can retrofit infotainment bits from later models to an extent, so you can have a wider screen nav etc. Something like a 740i would be quite nice I reckon, though a quick look around ebay suggests people are starting to ask more money for 38s.. A mate has an older LS400 and for the short while I drove it once, it felt like a very nice armchair kinda drive. I imagine the later LS430's can only be better in that respect

That would be my choice. My old '99 S320 had over 280K on the clock and never missed a beat, drove like new and had toys galore. The newer shape are also coming down in price too. Lots of car for your money with these things... scontent-dft4-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/24862489_10155796450082295_5454010516899872137_n.jpg?oh=587c64b7d535ea414eadaf32a2594185&oe=5AC0F5DD

Try as I might, I just can't get excited by a Jaaaaaaaaag. Can't put my finger on it, but I see them and just think 'meh'. I can understand that, I couldn't get excited about them either, but I thought i'd try one, bought a X-type, didn't really care for that at all, it was just a bit, as you say 'meh'. Bought myself a S-type V6, this one... Loved it, and I couldn't put my finger on why, I just really liked it, it's not really my type of car at all, but I dunno, I thought it was fabulous, so after I sold it I decided to buy myself a S-type V8, this one... Love it more, again, not really my type of car, but it's so comfy, and wafty!! Not to mention ridiculously cheap to buy!

Having just checked the prices on S-types, I could most definitely be tempted.
I've read a lot of horror stories about the build quality & electrics on late 90s, early 00's S-class Mercs, and the thought of astronomical repair bills are putting me off a bit...

You mention the CL; I've just picked up a year 2000 CL500 and it has blown my mind. I also have an XJR6 and I've not driven the Jag since picking up the Mercedes. I know they have the potential for monumental bills, but in my mind the cheap purchase cost makes it a gamble worth taking. It FEELS very well put together. Double-glazing, massaging seats, Nappa leather, keyless entry, (worryingly complex and costly) Advanced Body Control suspension system that makes it handle brilliantly but ride like an S Class, soft close doors and a suede/Alcantara headlining. It's one of the quietest cars I've ever owned at many, many MPH. *edit for pic. Love that profile.

S-TYPE rot, lots, in awkward places. Like rear subframe mounting points etc.
Sills are common too.
Other than that, my dad's was £650 for an 01 3.0 v6 with 90k on it and a knackered gearbox.
£100 for an autobox, £150 to a local garage for fitting and a service.
On the road for under a grand.
4 years of faultless use, needed nothing.
Rot got it at last test, £2k quote.
No ability to DIY.
Sold it on Facebook via local page. 2x Lithuanian guys appeared. £300 became £250.
It was back on the road within 2 weeks with a valid test.
Father and son, mechanics, prepared to graft at home.

I really fancy one of these but every time I've looked, they have been later and therefore too much Road Tax ££ - I assume yours is still £20 a month?

For less than £5k I'd be buying a Jag XJ6 X350. I'll reserve judgement but we'll wait and see.
They lack many of the rust issues of the X30Xs. There are more electrics I admit! But I am convinced now! I can't see them dropping seeing as good X30xs are still a few grand.

You want a reliable luxobarge go J. I'd take a Lexus over a Merc or BMW anyday, more reliable and well built than anything German. Lexus GS300, either a Mk1 or Mk2 with the legendary 2JZ engine. Cool as beans when slammed on a nice set of wheels with a straight through. Get a good one for less than a grand with all the toys, cruise control etc. I picked this one up, with only 60k and mot for £150.

The car that holds the squidgy ride record for me was a rover 800 series, more waft than a fart factory but as you can imagine... basic toys. Fortunately for me though, the less electricals the better. I'd have another if I hadn't already experienced precision German engineering.

I can only insure cars as classics so will have to wait until 2020 before I can have a CL500 again.

GS300s are cheap as chips...was surprised at them putting out 220bhp as well! They do seem to have a level of luxury over the Jags...
