I have recently installed a large wood burner in the garage, however i need to move the air around, so i have made a heat exchanger from a 25ltr barrel and 12volt car electric radiator fan.
My problem, the fan spins to fast at 12volt, i need a resistor/control module that i can use to reduce the speed.
I purchased one from ebay for £6 which worked a treat, however it went on fire after 30seconds of use.
I'm looking for a cheep, of the peg solution, anyone have any suggestions?

get to a scrapyard and find a low speed cooling fan resistor, pretty common on older pre canbus/multiplex single fan twin speed french things.

You may be able to use a pulse controller switching a relay. That would give you more variations in speed too.

Fit a 24v fan, it will run at approx half it's rated speed on 24v

get a stove fan. they are on ebay. work by some kind of witchcraft, they just sit on top of the woodburner and get going once it gets up to temperature. they just move the air around, and they work very well, the hot air coming from the top of the stove gets blown around rather than just going straight up, the woodburner is the only heating we have in our bungalow and the fan just moves the air to equalise the temp everywhere. and after the initial cost (about £30) they use no electric or batteries. really worth looking into.

Wire in a single headlamp bulb - the more bulbs you add, the faster it will run.
