I'm about to convert my Rover P6 to power steering. I've sourced a steering box, but need a pump to give the hydraulic 'assist'.
I could do the usual method of mounting a pump on the engine auxiliary belt, but due to space constraints that may be largely impractical with the turbo'd engine fitted. I have however heard of people fitting electric power steering pumps instead of the normal engine driven pump. Does anyone know much about these conversions?
Ebay has plenty of what I guess could be suitable motor/pump/reservoir setups for sale, is it a case of finding one that looks the right size and shape, running some heavy duty power cable to it, fit some custom hoses and job done?

It really is that easy - did it on a Range Rover / Defender hybrid years ago with a random Japanese pump from a Scrappies and custom hoses.

I was Googling it yesterday and came across a couple of references about avoiding Vauxhall pumps and going for Citroen pumps? Other than that no specific details, which means either it's stupidly easy to do, or there's a reason only few people ever do it? I had no idea electric power steering pumps were a thing until a few weeks back!

My mate runs the zafira pump on his comp safari landrover based vehicle. It powers the landrover steerig box no issues. And has been hammered for over 5 years.

Sounds like the same abuse one would get going to the shops and back once a week The power steering box I've bought for my P6 looks similar to one of the Land Rover power steering boxes, just layed out differently to suit the different application. Any idea what sort of size these things are? Hard to judge the size as I've never knowingly seen one before!

most on older vehicles will use the alternator exciter wire to trigger a decent sized relay (106/saxo use a 60 amp maxi fuse on the permanent live feed)
newer stuff is canbus and often variable and trickier to implement.

That could be why I've come across references to the Citroen pumps being preferential, mainly from the Saxo's?

I do know the Citroen pumps are electro-hydraulic pumps. Another one is the Mercedes A-Class ; theirs can be a better fit in some applications due to being upright.

Having a look on ebay the Mercedes pumps look very tall, hard to scale though? Hunting round ebay it looks like a pump from a late 90's to early 2000's Astra could work? I see some cables on them, one looking like power one earth and a multiplug with 3 wires on it?

As above, Citroën Saxo power steering pumps work, we had them fitted on marco GT cars where I used to work, they were also standard fit on TVR Tamora, T350 and sagaris.

One of the quickest guys around the Nurburgring in a Mk2 Golf uses a Saxo pump. IIRC it's one of the few things on his car that has yet to go wrong. It's not your normal Golf mind you. pinderwagen.com/

I have an old camper fitted with electric power steering by this bloke. www.talbot-express-power-steering-conversions.co.ukNice chap and excellent job, he will do most vehicles its as light as a feather, its not rocket science if you can weld to make your own

It will come in handy even if you never use it

Got an electric hydraulic pump on mine. Wasnt enough room in the engine bay for one so it in the boot. Easy to do plus it work without the engine running.
Its now controlled by the ECU (but doesn't have to be) so it off when cranking. The ecu controls the voltage by a SSR and give max power at low speed but continuously reduces the voltage over speed.
Theres a pressure sensor that stop it rather than overload the system or blow a fuse.
The pump was a £20 one off of ebay i think it was a Vaxhall corsa or Renault/Pug.

wouldn't have been Corsa as they have an electric column Pug/Citroen run a relay that is switched by the alternator exciter wire.

ahh nice, was it much work getting that running? the multiplug makes it look rather daunting unlike the saxo that is just two wires and a relay!

I think theres was one earth one main power one switch and one live. I just used the SSR as its rated at 100amps and can switch at 2000hz.
