In the last 10 years especially, I tend to lose interest in what ever car I have at that moment in time, mostly after spending more dosh on it than its worth! Granted, never spent more than £2500 on one but maybe that's a good thing. The longest time I have owned a weekend toy is 18 months and that was the MX5 but even the lovely Lexus I now have seems to have lost its sparkle for me although I do enjoy the thing. I do have a work car so these are only toys but I wish I could "fall in love" with one and keep it for at least a few years!

I have the same outlet. Mrs Pistonpopper says I can have as many cars/motorbikes, or whatever as I like, But only one girlfriend! I've not checked yet, but I'm presuming that after we finally get married I can still only have one girlfriend then too... I've got a couple lined up, but i'm not sure which one to pick. Maybe just work through them one of them at a time! I dunno, like I said, I'll have to check the rules, I'll get back to you!

I think I'm the opposite with cars, hanging on to them. I bought my 1999 1.8T Passat in 2004 with about 85K on the clock. Still have it, albeit in my wife's name now on 262K, after over 13 years. When I first bought it, I thought I'd hang onto it for a couple of years, but we still have it. I know it's not especially "cool", nothing wow about it, but it grew on me for being a good comfy all rounder. I drove it today and I still like the way it drives in a it does everything quite well kind of way. I'm still happier spending money getting issues fixed as they arise along the way. It might not be strictly economic against its value. Then again I'm not losing anything in depreciation terms, so it's still cheap motoring, and I still like driving it.

Cool story bro. Was expecting this thread about about a fellow RR with a serious illness... So that's good... That they don't and just have what we all have 👊

I have one too, but it's that a can't sell them. I've never sold a vehicle. I need to sell on my 2005 van but hate the idea.

When I bought my first Mk III Cavalier, It was a daily, 8 years old from a mainstream auction house. I drove it around for a couple of years, found I liked it, it was undemanding, reliable, quick enough, reasonably economical etc so I bought another, younger one - and another - and another! I used to keep one as workshop loaner but folk kept buying them from me so I had to get another - and another - and so on! Then all of a sudden all the Cavaliers were gone! The 2 I still have I bought in 2004 and 2006 respectively. I've not bought anything to replace them with cos I still can't find anything that does the job they do! I wouldn't exactly say I love my Cavs (that's reserved for my Sprint and Toledo) but I have a lot of respect for a car that "does what it says on the tin" and keeps doing it year in and year out! And now the Cav is definitely retro and some are even becoming classics!
I think the OP MAY grow out of this condition, when I was young I changed my car more often than my underwear! I think what cured me was my Volvo 122S Estate which I owned from 1982 (when I was 28) until 2011 (and I should NEVER have sold it) Though of course I owned dozens of other cars in that time as well. Perhaps he's just not found "HIS" car yet! Women and cars are alike in this respect, the time when you are not looking is the time you meet the car (or woman) you've been looking for all these years!

SmokeEm you should buy yourself a new car every month for a year, that way you could knock at least 12 off your list! Oh, and don't forget to tell us about how it's going!

Steve I wasn't looking, was also in disguise and wearing horse blinkers and she still found me (come to that most of the cars I own I have tripped up over and ended up with them rather than gone looking for them)

I'm the opposite, I'll bond with a car very quickly and if I do sell, it's traumatic!

It's possible you/we do have an illness... Or at least a bit of an emotional or psychological dink that means we throw ourselves into old cars rather than something else. But let's face it almost everyone has a passion or an addiction of some sort.
I feel the same as you though... I tend to buy something because I love it, work through the problems it comes with, then I kind of lose interest and start hammering after something different.
I have a theory that ownership, on a day to day basis, slowly blinds you to the appeal of the vehicle, and it becomes impossible to still feel as excited about it once you know intimately all of its faults, weaknesses, and compromises.
After a year or two, that's ALL you really know. Even when people admire them we just think "You have no idea how rusty it is, or leaky, or that the gearbox is shagged".
That's what I think it is for me anyway. I'm constantly convinced there's a perfect fault-free retro or classic barnstormer out there for me.

I’m the same.
Buy car Fix all the issues Fall in love with it Stand and look at it for a bit Fall out of love with it Sell it
I have a couple of cars a year, and probably always will.
I’ve just purchased a mk4 Golf V5.... I have to say, I don’t know why I bought it, can’t stand the thing, and I’m still ironing out the issues it has.
