I'm rebuilding a vw 2.5tdi engine for my T4 transporter. I had one seversl years ago and one of the biggest pains in the bum was the vaccuum pump. On this it is bolted onto the cylinder head and a push rod is operated from the camshaft lobe. These pumps fail and leak oil and make a hell of a clattery noise. Sadly they arent repairable and new ones are expensive. I'm tempted to get shot of it and blank the hole. I think I read somewhere that transits use a rotary vaccuum pump operated off the auxilliary belt. Do these need an oild feed and return line?

Don't they have integral vac & fuel pumps? As in fuel and vac in the same housing?

No thats the later pd engines. This is the old 5 cylinder Audi/vw/volvo unit

Hi, Or they may be driven off the back of the alternator, which makes for a different (read expensive) set up. Some older Peugeot engines had them driven off of a 'V' pulley bolted to the back of the camshaft, they might be easier to fit if you can find one.

Smiley transit ones are integral with the alternator, so aux belt driven as you require. Not hard to expensive to find, but don't have much of a reputation for being reliable either.

id just fit a new one, they last long enough This....... My A6 with this lump has 305k on it and the pump is original. Sometimes it clatters, sometimes not, but it always sucks..... Nick

The early supercharged Mercedes had electric vac pumps (slk clk c class) Could be another option

Thanks. I did think about an electric one, as my old Toyota Hiace had one, but they are noisy as hell.
From reading that Volvo site, and a few others, it would seem that the electric pumps fitted to volvos and Saabs are dependant on a vacuum switch to detect vacuum drop and operate pump. From what Ive read, the switches are very temperemental and can cause the pump to operate continuously.....and get stupidly hot!!! Still an option I wont rule out though. Just need to find a quiet one.
