I'm in the prosses of upgrading my feeble 35amp alternator (off my talbot samba 1 ltr) there are 2 wires 1 thick one to the battery 1 to the ignition light could anyone tell me if the connections on this mighty 70 amp (02 1.2 clio 16v ) are the same ie large nut to battery small wire to ignition light .Or is this small wire an "exiter" wire .Is there any way to bench test the clio alternator (using a drill to spin it ) and could someone help with were the wires would go to bench test thanks andy  |

The small wire is usually the exciter wire, on VWs it always seems to be blue and fray.

Hi, Alternators are exited through the ignition light. Don't forget to uprate the Battery cable from the alt. Easiest way to test it is to put on the car and try it.

right ive rigged up the alt to a load and battery .I wasnt getting a charge ? but when i touch the orange wire to the heavy cable off the back of the alternater i get 13.8v to 14 v so if I'm right the heavy wire to the back off the starter the exiter to the ign lamp to energize it?? colnerov all the heavy cables have been uprated to 100 amp andy

the heavy wire to the back off the starter the exiter to the ign lamp to energize it? Correct. Connections to be made the same as your old alternator.  |

cheers ill try it on the car tomorrow see if it works .Only uprated due to winter ie de misters sound system driving lights etc etc

right ok all fitted all shimmed up running true new longer belt large wire to large wire ignition to the orange wire HOWEVER! I'm not getting an ignition light on the dash got it charging at 13.8/14 volts but NO LIGHT ON MI DASH any clues peeps andy

So no dash light means that you haven't got the exciter wire from your car connected. What wires have you got? Just the two? Got a voltmeter?

all ive got on the car is 1 small wire that went to the charge light and a thick red on that went to the back of the starter from the old alternator the new alternator has one thick red which ive put to the rear of the starter the small orange wire to the charge light one (the one you earth and the light comes on )
ive checked that its charging with my multi meter which it is at 13.8/14 volts just no charge light when ignitions turned on !

Charge light works like this: Puts 12v through bulb, to exciter circuit, then earth. So when the alternator is not spinning, charge light is has a path earth and lights up. Alternator spins with exciter circuit energised, it generates current, and that path to earth is no longer a path to earth because the exciter is now at the same potential as the rest of the electrical system, so there's 14v either side of the bulb, it extinguishes. How many connectors are on the alternator? What do you have there? With your voltmeter, and the charge light / exciter unplugged (engine off, ignition on), verify there is 12 v between charge light / exciter cable and earth. Next, measure the voltage between the connector that the charge / exciter cables goes on to, and earth. This should be 0v. Next, start the engine with the charge light / exciter unplugged, and check that it is not charging. I suspect this connector is permanently energised, indicating a possible faulty diode. Or something wrong with the exciter, or an earth missing. Is there an earth peg on your alternator? |

fad the alternator whats on the car now is the picture at the top i cant see no earth peg just a heavy red wire to rear of starter small orange to charge light
when i put my old 35 amp alternator back on eveythings dandy this is the second 70 amp alternator ive tried this one came of a running driving (charging with charge light working only the other day lol ) I'm stumped but ill try your tests in the mornin

My guess here is that the alternator you are fitting is working but the exciter circuit isn't bulb compatible. Clios from the first phase 2 onwards used LEDS in the dash so must have some kind of smart circuit in the dash to operate the charge light.

Clios from the first phase 2 onwards used LEDS in the dash so must have some kind of smart circuit in the dash to operate the charge light. bang on the money!! the alternator is a "smart charge system" one and has to go through a body control unit to put the charge light on so when i put the old charge light wire to it it charges right away BUT i cant have the charge light indicator oh well i may as just fit a 12v gauge thanks everyone for the help andy |
