Infra red for paint curing but a simple thermostatic oil filled radiator for keeping the general chill down / providing background heat - I can use it on it's lowest setting overnight in my 400 sq ft garage and it's 15 + degrees the following morning whilst it's below zero outside - it's quite economical on the electric too - but keeping the draughts out and good insulation helps - I am in my workshop all day so I also invest in decent thermals - the latest lightweight breathable ones are fantastic 'Norde' are the ones that I recommend - you can get them on Amazon fairly cheap

I have a dimplex over door heater, works well,
Blows warm air around well, and not bad to run, not sure on cost to buy as I "borrowed" mine when the firm I worked for went bust.

ALDI have a few different heaters in at the moment, nothing special but cheap and usually their stuff has a 3 year warranty.

unless you need it for painting, just get warmer overalls and a hat.
a small fan heater to huddle by to thaw out if necessary.

A number of members on another forum I frequent have mentioned diesel fired heaters as being very good at warming a large area quite well.

I've got a pair of these radiators that work really well in my garage keeping it warm (and also for drying paint), but it is fully insulated which helps contain the heat At work there's a few paraffin and propane space heaters that bring the temperature up really quick which is essential with a single skin tin roof!

There are a couple of warnings for using any fuel burning heaters, be it oil/gas or solid fuel. The first being co2, the second being condensation, every litre of fuel burnt produces about a litre of water. Ttfn Glenn

^ Water & condensation I often have a calor gas/propane heater around. They're handy in a room or small workshop but beware the naked flames and the water they create. The heat they give off won't do a lot to heat a big workshop.

The fuel / paraffin / diesel heaters are no good if you are planning on doing painting / spraying has the chance of them contaminating the air / environment around you will greatly increase your chance of suffering with paint silicone contamination

I made a waste oil burner and it's brilliant. It's made out of a lpg tank. Being 5 to 6mm thick I still can get areas of it to glow cherry red.
Normally run it about 300 to 400 deg.

Interesting you say that as having only a single garage, floor space is at a premium so that over door jobbie may be an idea for me!

We bought 10 of the square shaped Stanley workshop heaters they were worse than useless, nowhere near 2000w output when compared to a cheap 2000w one from Argos. Every single one of them melted it's plug and we had 2 melt down, they were all returned.

I've been looking at building a waste oil heater too, but all the designs I find online either confuse me, or don't show eough detail on the critical bits.
Either that or maybe I'm just thick!
Anybody found a clear design?

i got a electric bathroom heater for free and made a frame for it and put it aside where i am working. Don't need to heat the whole garage which takes time with fan heaters. You have direct heat from moment 1 Peter
