Happens to me more often than it should.
Just lost some storage due to owner's unforeseen circumstances. Not a problem as I rarely used it, but it did come in handy. No garage, just a space tucked out the way.
A week later. My gearbox goes strange on the 9000. Attempts to engage whilst in neutral. Replaced all the clutch components inc. clutch line and no change. It's not a car that is readily available for spares any more - Try finding a FM57-101 gearbox for a 2.3T and not anywhere, apart from severely overpriced or brand new for 2K.
Yesterday got a call from a contact who knows a guy with exactly the same car as mine - 20 mins away. A 1996 P reg Saab 9000 2.3 CSE Turbo - MOT fail and wants it gone for the price of 1yrs road tax. The chances of this happening are crazy, even crazier someone local. It has 1 month MOT left, drives, and who just lost his storage?
I have to have this car. I will not let anyone else have this car. It's mine. Spares bliss!
What are my options? What can I do?

Bookmarked - if you find a solution I'll likely copy it Your donor has MOT - you tax it - bring it home - park it (nice and legal) on the road - strip it before the tax runs out - crush what's left on the MOT date - get a tax refund Not quite as daft as it sounds - my daily is legal and I'm looking at parking it on the road and removing the engine - leaving it with no engine for a couple of weeks while I get the crank reground I did similar last month - it was parked on the road with no back axle for a few days !

But wouldn't parking it on the road with no MOT be an offence that could see you in a dispute with your insurance Co if someone hits it? Oh and if its failed the MOT then you could also be committing an offence by driving it home depending on what the fail was.

I need parts that would render the vehicle unmovable - far easier to find a space for it - They are pretty hot on semi-abandoned cars around here, or cars with bits missing

when I was a kid my dad broke a car on a trailer hooked to the car over week or so in the street then just towed the trailer with what was left to the scrap yard.
As far as I can see this would still be perfectly legal.

^ dva will cancel the tax if its not mot d , or applied for Do you have a source for this - it's not something I've heard before The mot on my daily ran out just after RRG, then it was parked up off-road (insured and taxed). It took a while for me to arrange the time/parts/repairs and get it mot'd. According to the DVLA website they didn't cancel the tax when the mot was expired. Me is confused

Just to lighten the tone - most things can be fixed up and mot'd to live again with a little bit of effort

may be not on POSH BOYS BORIS JOHONSON TYPES but on on proper people they do , sorry ordinary people Aye its true, the people at the DVLA get the names, google them, and if they are deemed "pretty posh" and their car is felt to be at least "rather swanky" or "pretty cool" by an office poll they don't cancel their tax, but if the boys and girls at the DVLA Swansea office working on or near minimum wage deem the owner to be "a bit of a scruff" and the car to be "somewhat tatty" then they cancel the tax with a little ceremony out back in a converted cleaners cupboard. If there's a tie break situation or too high a degree of ambiguity they turn to Google Street View and check out the address. If the house is considered by the majority to be a "sick crib" then they are left alone, but anyone with a garden like Steptoe's yard gets the tax chopped. If they are extra scruffy they also cancel their drivers licence and come with a bin bag to take away all your surplus shoes. ;-) seriously though, not heard if that one either. Got a source? As for the OP...You can be had for doing major work to a car on the roadside (I was warned once) so be swift. Or stick it on a trailer. Or stick it under a cover. Or get friendly with so done with a place you can lay it up for a month or two in exchange for beer tokens.

DVLA don't cancel tax for a vehicle without MOT. My saab was without MOT for a fortnight whilst I polybushed the front end no problems.

Yeah the cancelling tax thing is not an issue. I ran my MX5 for near 6 months without MoT and didn't find out until I got a nice fine from PC Plod doing a sting specifically for uninsured/untaxed/unMoT'd cars. DVLA never said a word, tax was still valid for the whole time.
To answer 60sixs question, I would agree with what Nomad is saying. park the two cars face to face, strip the bits you need and get them swapped over at the roadside. 3 Weeks should be more than enough time I'd have thought

In the original post it states 'mot fail' which I took as meaning it has failed the MOT, even if there is still a valid ticket with three weeks remaining on it it is still an offence to drive a car which you know to have faults.

My cars mot expired in June of this year. Dvla took a further 2 months worth of tax before then informing me my mot had expired and my vehicle would therefore no longer be taxed. Therefore I think you do have a window of opportunity to sort things out.
