Longshot this one, but I am trying to track down who had a certain phonenumber in Cirencester in 1980 My 1968 TVR was exported from the UK in 1982 an I am researching the UK history of it. Unfortunately I have very little information about the previous owners in the UK and the DVLA will not release their records. In my search I came across an ad in 'Thoroughbred & Classic Cars' were a gold and black TVR V8 is offered for sale in Cirencester in 1980. The ad describes a car very similar to mine and I am very curious if I could somehow manage to track down the seller from 1980 to see if it was indeed my car being sold two years before being exported to Norway. The ad states the car is for sale in Cirencester and the phone number given was 66179. My question is if there would be any chance of finding the former holder of this phone number in 1980? BT Archivs can't help, neither can the Cirencester library nor the Cirencester Historic Society. The ad My car in 1986 or 1987

Shouldn't be too difficult.
The area code will be what ever it is for Cirencester.
Then you need one extra digit at the beginning of the number you have there. Just do a bit of research and you may find what the number they added will be.
The numbers in the area I was in all had a 3 added to them. The rest stayed the same. So for example they went from 66193 to 363193. And that's how it is now.
Since that is also a land line number, you never know, the same people may live there or may have moved on and the new people on that number may know how to contact them. It's also not uncommon to take a land line number with them. So it is very possible that the number is still with the person who had that car back then.

Given how british telephone numbers have evolved I would guess that it might be worth ringing the ten numbers made up from: 01285?66179, changing the ? through 0-9 and seeing who answers. 01285 is the area code for Cirencester and I guess you'll need 0044 instead of the 0... but you probably know that already Who ever answers might think you are a lunatic but I know that both my parents and the in-laws still have the same last 5 digits of their telephone numbers that they have had since the late 70s, BT have then added another number in front of that when they have expanded the network.

Ok. Just looked. Majority of Cirencester numbers have a 6 in front.
So I would hazard a guess that 01285 666179 is the current version of that number.
Give it a call and see what they say?

i'm just old enough to remember when our phone number was just 3 digits , then 5 , then 6 , then 10 , then 11....and now the landline is virtually redundant! good luck with the hunt.

666179 would be a Fairford number I would think. Small village about 13 miles from Cirencester. My daughters live there. We moved to Ciren in the mid 90s and I don't ever remember a TVR like yours in town. It's a pretty small place so most cars would show up sooner or later, especially to a car nut.

BT has told me the number is now 656179 so I will give it a go. Just a bit worried I will get hung up on, but I guess that is part of it 😕
Strange how you can't search the numbers in the UK or am I missing something?

Isn't there a TVR place just south of Ciron at Kemble airfield? Maybe someone there remembers it?

I know someone in Ciren who would know ever single interesting car in the town for the last 40 years and who owned them. If your phone number draws a blank I can ask him tomorrow if he recognises the pic or remembers a TVR from that time. If it was a Ciren car for any length of time he probably worked on it. He seems to have worked on every other car.

Yes he always has a lot of TVRs parked outside, he also does general race prep. 1980s may be a while before his time though. No joy from my friend however. Sorry

One of the classic car magazines (Classic cars or Classic & Sportscar) have a section where people can send in photos of cars they are trying to get information on, might be worth a shot.
