I've been a forum user for several years now and as a journalist, written about cars (and bikes) for decades. Used to have columns in Top Gear and Classic Car Mart for example, and edited a short-lived title called Jalopy in the early '90s. Now I've just launched a new mag called The Classic Motoring Review and wonder what the protocol is for publicising it within the forum? Is it allowed? Can I plug the website? It's very much a labour of love with a tiny circulation, and I think it should appeal to forum users, but I don't want to break any rules. So what's the deal?

Okay, and thanks for the enthusiasm for reckless self-promotion My new magazine is reaction to the dumbing-down of much of the specialist media, not just the ones dedicated to the old cars we love. It harks back to what for me were the great days of Car and MotorSport, i.e. 1970 – 1985, whuch routinely published lengthy articles written with great flair and no kow-towing to advertisers. Writers like Mel Nichols, Steve Cropley, Doug Blain, Denis Jenkinson and L.J.K. Setright were my journalist heroes then, and indeed several of them appear or will be appearing in The Classic Motoring Review... even after they've sadly passed away! Younger writers who espouse the same traditions of great, fearless and chartacterful journalism also appear in TCMR, including Gavin Green, Richard Bremner, Richard Williamsd and Colin Goodwin. And there's no advertising to be compromised by in TCMR, or indeed photos, as I believe that great writing delivers its own imagery in the minds of real readers. TCMR is however printed on high quality paper and in the form of a paperback book – so it looks and feels as substantial as It hope it'll read. It's also available only on subscription, although individual copies can be bought via our website (see below). And if you subscriber before mid-November, you'll get a handsome slip-case – worth £9.50 – to house a year's-collection of TCMR absolutely FREE ! Finally, fans of Retro Rides will be well catered for in TCMR – in the next issue we have features on four decades with a Morris Traveller, an American odyssey aboartd a W124 Merc and Gavin Green's paen to the Sunbeam Stiletto. Plus my own love affair with Ford Cortinas. So have a look at the website, or visit the Gibbons Books stall at the upcoming NEC Classic Car show, and avail yourself of a very different type of car magazine. www.classicmotoringreview.uk

Sounds good as i still miss CCC magazine and lament what it morphed into - but no photos ? Really ?
I was sold until i heard that . Admittedly i despise modern mags due to them having more photos than text , and poor ones at that but none at all ?
Edit - i have seen the magazine and i understand how you want it to look and the content - its looks great , i may try it .

Interesting idea. Maybe look at Patreon rather than subscriptions? May generate more income overall.

I remember Jalopy. Top quality journalism in magazines of various sizes in full Techniblackandwhite with print that came off on your hands... ah, happy days. One of Mr Myatt's, am I right?

Sounds promising. I'm a big fan of reading good words written by clever people rather than just looking at photos and trying to work stuff out for myself. A mix of the two never hurts, but...
When I first started reading motoring mags photos were so shockingly printed often as not that they may as well not have been there anyway... grainy join-the-dots, B&W, smudged ink and curse word separations meant it was a bit like deciphering cuneiform without ever having seen the Rosetta Stone. Even when mags had glossy colour a lot of pages remained B&W and even niche stuff like Back Street Heroes (when it was very niche) had text articles (and stories, which admittedly were often slightly poorer than the average Ladybird Book) but a decent author would always rise above the slightly dull presentation. I remember fondly such ploughman poets as Jim Fogg recalling his days in the garage and trying to explain to fledgling lady motorists that you weren't supposed to fill the oil through the dipstick tube.
I've got books by Jenks on race car design and histories of Grand Prix car technology and such, and LJK Setright always made a good read on more or less anything so it'd be nice to go back. I hope this project works out and is successful, it might well prove a great antidote to the iPad generation with an attention span of 18 seconds or 147 characters, whichever comes fi...ooooh, look. My copy arrived here in NL today. I've read the first few chapters and I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far. Think I'll savour it - a few chapters a day sort of thing. And yeah, chapters seems like the right word since it's a journal, isn't it?
