Sounds like a publicity stunt to me, you could get one professionally restored for much less than that, the early models are just a massive meccano kit!

I watched one of those Petrolicious videos about a bloke who was restoring early RRs and he mentioned this deal as well. I think it's genuine. Many of the early parts are impossible to find. It's for the collectors not for the real RR drivers who test their vehicles on.. the drive to the gastro pub and back.
Probably get a lifetime's supply of mustard cords thrown in at that price.

I appreciate that most will gasp at that price - I have been involved in professional restoration of vehicles for some 40 years and believe me to restore one to that extent is what it costs - sure you can get someone to bolt one together and throw some paint on it and save yourself some money but it will be nowhere in comparison in what a Jaguar - Land Rover Heritage restoration will be.

I can understand expensive professional restoration costs but 135K plus supply the donor vehicle...the world is gone mad, no two ways about it. Some premium for the 'Heritage' tag but no doubt somebody will pay it.

Best you don't look up the price tag for the electric E types they are also building! They will cost more than your average 3 bed house! Almost forgot about the new D types, they will be a million plus per car.
But just remember, these cars are not being built for average Joe. The are being built for the kind of people whereby £130k+ isn't a big deal and most probably won't even get used all that much. The kind of people building them aren't your average spanner monkeys, they are the best of the best and no doubt command a wage fitting of that.
I think it is a great bit of PR and I wonder how long before other manufacturers tag onto the idea.

Being actively involved in the world of retro / classic / vintage vehicle restoration 'what it costs' & 'expensive' are phrases I hear daily even though I am at the other end of the market from where Jaguar - Land Rover Heritage are - thing is you have to have an understanding of what it takes to produce something of that quality - you need a full machine shop, full fabrication shop, paint & trim facilities that demand the very latest equipment and when you have invested over a million £ in this lot along with a state of the art facility to house it all in you then need a team of the very best guys you can put your hands on to make everything work along with an excellent management team - the overheads will be very, very heavy but to produce restorations of this quality is what it takes and £135k minimum is nothing in the real world of vehicle restoration - once you get into the exotic end of the market (low volume vehicles) you are into several hundred thousand for a concours restoration. |

They already have: Aston Martin, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Rolls Royce, Bentley, BMW all have works heritage facilities for parts, service & restoration - other manufactures will join this market over the next few years - it works both ways for them especially when you are still supplying the market with current models. |

Land Rover have been restoring series 1's for several years, and even recreated a production line as a showpiece, but I don't know how much that costs. Parts are still avaiable for much of the RRC range, but even the unobtainium bits could be recreated, by one of the specialists

I'm not questioning the cost of "re-birthing" these old busses...just the worth of the finished product. I just can't see the value in it speaking as an ex 3 door classic owner.

I doubt that even at that price LR will be making a profit - I saw that car at Goodwood and spoke with one of the guys who works on the project. It's essentially a new car albeit on an existing chassis - they are torn down to individual component level and reassembled with either brand new parts or parts are refurbished till they look like new - repairs to the steelwork are done by unpicking spotwelds and spotwelding in new with genuine panels so it's a true factory finish. A lot of parts for suffix A cars are no longer available - fabrics, door seals, mirrors, etc etc so they are having them remanufactured (including kitkat seats) I restore them myself and was very impressed with the detail.

Cost of iconic models are spiralling, "Reborn" are hugely expensive but there's plenty of others in the L/R community who cashing in.
With the US export market opening up to the 200tdi Defender under the 25 year rule prices are going bonkers(seen £18k+ for some used examples and nearly £40k for refurbished ones), so £100k+ for an OE refurbished vehicle with 100% original spares it's plus a level of margin it's easy to reach that number.
In an era where savings don't generate much return,paying for high end restorations is an investment which in turn encourage some folk to spend more to make them "best in class". For me I enjoy learning the skills I need and having a go at all parts of working on cars rather than paying for a finished product but each to there own.

Like somebody already mentioned: this is not supposed to be an option for average joe. It is a new business model for buyers who do not make their money with physical labour. It´s more like banksters who want to reward themselves for producing tons of money. They buy "things" (fill the ""s with whatever you want) to express their success, the lifestyle they´ve achieved and their wealth that allows them to "waste" their money with "toys" like singer 911s, eagle e types, restored riva boats - or now factory rebuilt rangerovers... But isn´t that a clever business model? RR built their cars in lousy quality with beginning rot right from the production line many years ago and today they can repair their faults and make serious money again on the same cars by doing so...  I have no pity with people who are willing to pay for that. Whilst appreciating the sentiment in your final sentence there is another way of looking at it - whilst ever they are prepared to pay for such things at such prices they in turn pay the wages / retain in employment thousands of ordinary but very talented & skilled staff that are employed within the multi million £ restoration industry - In the main I think you will find that the majority of the staff within the restoration industry apply their skills outside of the day job to something retro / classic within their own ownership and normally it's a head turner (or the makings of one) - 'what goes around - comes around' |

I don't quite get the astonishment at the price - is it just because it's a classic British car? I wonder how much Porsche are charging for the 911 rebuilds or Ferrari? No one would blink an eye at a £120k Porsche (which is a darn sight easier to restore than a Rangie!) Bearing in mind a 'normal' new Range Rover costs between £75k-£150k, it compares very well - especially as resale value will be a lot higher, leaving the owner lots more money to give to charity  |
