Hi all I have an issue with main beam but trying to establish if it’s just one headlamp that’s wrong or both. There’s a difference with main beam switched on compared to dipped beam but whether it’s the right difference is another matter. First photo is dipped beam according to main beam warning light... Second photo is main beam on according to main beam warning light... I *THINK* driver side is correct but passenger side isn’t if so I can just check wiring on both sides so that they match. Can anyone confirm one way or the other and what might be wrong if it’s not what I say? Cheers!

Don't know if this is your issue, but I had a set of Angel eyes fitted to my Astra by a "respected mechanic" who took the main beam feed for both lights off the drivers side, and my passenger one was really dull like That.

Well they have got angel eyes too so could be the cause. Unlikely. It looks like you need to get handy with a multi-meter and test the feeds, and double check the bulbs are in perfect condition. This may also be helpful. Read 'COMMON' as 'EARTH'. 'Mericans.

I removed the passenger side unit and a replacement H4 bulb holder has been wired in at some point, comparing it to the driver side it looks like the low and high were switched around.
Can’t confirm yet as I’m off to Halfords to get some white side lights to replace the blue ones before I put everything back together to save me having to do it twice.

After switching the wiring, and as it happens also switching the bulbs as they were blue off road bulbs that were fitted, I’m not sure if I’m in any different or better place.
Think I’ll retest with a multimeter to check things are definitely wired up correctly before trying to do more height and angle adjustments with the spring loaded mount bolts.

The thing you are after on dip beam isn't just the aim, it's a specific beam pattern the testers are looking for, not just a smudge of light at a certain height. It may be down to cheapy headlights too, not producing the correct beam pattern. 7" headlights, assuming that's what the acty uses, are not exactly expensive and ditching the Angel eyes seems more in keeping with your overall 'look'. Just my ongoing thoughts.

Just my ongoing thoughts. That’s the other side of the story too, these headlights are plain glass so part of today’s job list was to fit these beam deflectors... Which apparently by design work as they should as long as you line the centre of the bulb up with the centre of the deflector. Definitely know where you’re coming from in terms of replacing the headlights, to be honest i has forgotten they’d even got an angel in them until I started testing everything today. What I do like is how clear and bright they are but maybe I could replace them with brand new units with the the side light incorporated but without the halo. Or I could just disconnect the halo. I’m less wary of replacing them now that I know that the height adjustment is all original parts - it just accepts that diameter headlight bowl.

To be fair that MIGHT fix an issue with the headlights short term but looking at the bowl pattern they are not RHD headlamps, they have no beam pattern per-se, just a cutof which could be part of the problem. Try the beam deflectors by all means but you need new headlamps. The Halo rings bear no significance to the MOT, beam pattern or anything The reason they appear 'clear and bright' is that they are just chucking light down the road in front of you. Kind of like a halfway between a UK dip beam and full beam. A decent set of RHD patterned H4 bowls will be just as good if setup right. If you can find a pair of CIBIE IODE's buy them. They are not only proper looking bit of kit, my MGB with a pair of those has surpassed every car i've owned headlamp-wise.

Just realised that the nose down positive rake of the van isn’t helping with the lighting pattern so I think I should sort the suspension next before getting back on to the headlights
