I am fitting switchback LED bulbs as pilot and turn signals in my headlights. The Switchback bulbs are amber and white with a t10 socket that fits the stock bulb socket using only two wires that are run from a control box that has three wires as input; on earth, on turn signal in and the pilot light in. What I need help with is how to use relays to be able to switch between the pilot lights and turn signal when I am running pilot lights and need to use the turn lights.

I would assume the control box takes care of switching. When the yellow wire is live it will cause the sidelight to illuminate. When the red wire is live it will overide the sidelight circuit causing it to alternate between amber and white, or switch it to flashing amber only. At all other times it will remain white.
Is there a need for external relays?

Yea, literally just follow the diagram you have attached. No other components required, although you may find with an LED indicator you need to add a load resistor (available from most auto factors that stock LED bulbs) or an LED indicator relay.

Is there a need for external relays? It doesn't work like that unfortunately. If the side light is on it will not switch to turn signal and vice versa. However I need it to work like that using relays. |

Where did you get the kit from?
I would have assumed it worked by switching the polarity of the two wire output and had amber on +~- and white on -~+.
What you are asking it to do with relays is going to need an on~on relay with one output and two switched inputs. You would need the sidelights (pilot light) on the 'always on' side and the indicator on the 'switched on' side. When the power goes to the indicator it switches off the sidelight causing a flip flop effect between white and amber. Not a normal item for car spares shops but maybe available from electronics stores. Its going to have to be a bi pole relay as it will have to switch the positive and the negative side at the same time. What happens if you connect the bulb to a 12v power source without the control box? Does the control box drop the voltage?

Update - I switched the bulb around to change its polarity from the outset and it now works as you all had thought it would (and I had hoped for). It now cuts the white light when the wire to the turn signal (amber) is energized and then goes back to white when the turn signal is cut.  |
