Well I've sold the Jag and moved on to my personal bucket list. I guess when you get to a certain age, you realize if you don't do it now... So there I was looking for a 911 with G50 3.2 power plant to backdate or the other end of the scale a long hood pre 1974 car that I could add some more power to. A friend sent me an email about an estate sale, that had a bunch of 911 parts in it. Off I toddled and came back with this: None of the above!!! It's a 1975 (pre galvanization) 2.7 (worst engine out there) partially dismantled (and not 100% or even 95% there) but mostly rust free and the price was right It left me with a good stack of savings to have fun with it and just as important it has narrow hips. Off I went to pick it up with family and the owners family was there too. So now she resides in the garage with her new stable mate. I feel a winter project coming on!

Sifting through some of the treasures that it came with: It appears that this engine lid is worth a good bit of money (which should help) and I still have to work out what is there and what is missing with this: I'm at a bit of a loss as to what is and isn't there in the many boxes of parts. I've finally managed to work my way down to the tar covered floor boards and started stripping. Though I'm more than a little apprehensive what might be lurking underneath! These cars have a talent from rusting from the inside out! The back seems okay other than come surface rust in the usual window seal leak water trap areas.

Thanks Way more work than I was planning on, but with the Minnesota winter on its way, I should make some headway! The sound deadening tar stuff is almost all up... ...and the dreaded rot is minimal. A couple of extra drilled holes to weld up, but so far only rust marks and minor surface stuff!

Next job to finish scraping off the rest of the fur from the rear firewall / seat area. Then it will be out with the grinder and flap wheel.

About time this had a thread, you've kept us all waiting with that little tease shot in the 'best looking 911' thread.
Wish you all the luck with the project, will follow with interest as it is on my bucket list too - still some way to go before I start ticking items off though, since I have another country move coming up next year

It's been a long time coming but this time, I'm really determined to make it - and I'm approaching it knowing I won't be doing all of it. Where are you off to this time? I've decided to stick it out in the US for the foreseeable future. At the moment, things seem pretty good here, though the thought of coming home to Britain is always tempting.

I have every faith that you will, and whenever you feel - like in any project - that things aren't going your way and you are losing your Mojo all you have to do is post here and we'll help you get it back. The Mojo boosting properties of RR are well documented! If all goes according to plan, I will be in San Diego this time next year - unfortunately as far away from you as possible while still in the US. Nice weather but the worst State in which to own a modified car as far as I know. I feel obligated to blame SWMBO for that Enough thread derailing! Bring on more pictures of that amazingly rot free for the age shell you have in your garage

There is no such thing as an unloved 911. Shell looks good, everything else is just bolt on. Look forward to following along P.

Thanks gents I'm really happy to be able to play on it and maybe end up with something one day, that I couldn't afford otherwise. Piguin San Diego is a great place. Way warmer than where I live (especially in the winter). I'm a little envious! I 'had a go' at pulling the pedal box today, with a free couple of hours. I've been tapping the main two bolts and spraying them with PB blaster a couple of times a week. I've also given it a good rub with a wire brush, but as you might guess, I managed to break both bolts I did think about heating it, but there was a good amount of PB residue and under the dash isn't a great place to have a mini fire... Then on to the two at the back. I remember pulling a friends pedal box years ago on his '82, but my back bolts seemed to be really corroded in. As I tried polishing around them (to get rid of the rust) I realized that the prior owner must have been some sort of safety freak as it looked like he had gone and welded them in. Dang. I thought I was going to have to cut the rotten things off. I'll save that until next time, I thought as I had to carry on with the job list from the wife. This afternoon, I was reading Wayne's 101 book and realized that they are welded from the factory and I need to take the bolt out from the front on early models pulling the brake master cylinder at the same time. Argh!

Ha ha ha. Tease! I do need an engine but if I was to stray from the Porsche engine, it would probably be a built Suby STi motor as I know them... As that craziness is a long way off, I'll just try.. and... stay... focused... wonder if the V8 would fit in the engine bay!

I've read about a backdate project on Impact Bumpers some time ago, but didn't think about going back there. I should really. I need all the help and info I can get! Not sure my skill level is up to an engine swap. At the moment I'm going to struggle to understand all of the CIS stuff that's on the engine. I got a bit carried away after work this week and started playing with ideas for a shift knob. I know, I have a car in a million pieces, I just need to be working on pieces of tat like a shift knob! I couldn't get anywhere near the car and anything I can do to move it forward is a plus! So here it is... Still some tweaks to do, but generally there. I'm going to fill the 'R' with resin to match the car interior colour or accent colour and I think cut the numbers inward and fill those too. I started work on the front end as I chased some wires around the car that I won't need. Ended up pulling the spare, undoing a squillion petrol lines and unsticking the tank from the body. After a bit of cleanup this is what I was left with. Garage floor! There is still a ton of scary work to do. The smugglers box - a funny little trap door thing in the front, needs a clean up and where the electrics all sit is such a mess of wires and tubes... there is still a lot of work to do to carefully extract that lot so I can have the area painted. I'm not sure I'm man enough! Next up will be pulling this skid plate to get to the other side of the pedal assembly. I wasn't sure if the antiroll bar was attached to the skid plate (it seems to share bolts) so I left it alone until I could check. Once that's off, it will need a clean up and then I can have some fun with the pedal box! My aim is to do all of the 'inside the car - mostly hidden' bodywork myself and get help with the nice bits!

Little things like the gear knob might not seem like they are moving the game along, but truth is they do. Anything that helps you visualize where you want to go with the project gives you incentive, and strength to deal with the more mundane but necessary tasks.
Front boot looks really clean!
