Hi folks, anyone got experience with clio warning lights? Right so my daughter's partner recently bought an 03 clio 1.2 petrol to get him to and from work. He works on building sites so just wanted something so their good car wouldn't get wrecked. Considering he only gave £100 for it its not a bad wee car. So on his way home the other day some dash lights lit up and it went into limp mode, and I got a text saying dad, can you have a look at James's car. I took it for a run today and its no longer in limp mode but the lights are still lit up. The lights that are on, according to google mean it has an electronic fault( that's the two lights together zig zag and coil) and the engine light means it has an emissions fault. Now when i took it for a run today it drove fine, and if i gave it W.O.T the two lights (zig zag and coil)went out but came back on as soon as i eased off the throttle. So the big question is this.,..anyone any ideas as to how to fix? I'm thinking it must be an engine management sensor but any ideas which one? is there any way to test sensors with a multi meter? If they had more than £100 invested in this car and it had more than 3 months mot id tell them to get it checked out with a code reader, but i thought i would ask on here first. Thanks steve.

You need a code scan. The Engine MIL can come on for literally thousands of reasons. Clios are famed for poor wiring looms. There is a multi plug in the power distribution centre by the battery, that corrodes. It's buried right at the bottom and it powers the ecu to throttle body connection. Check this as well as the engine loom carefully but the long and the short of it is without a code scan you are literally stabbing in the dark.

Thanks Rich I'll check that out. Just got a text from my daughter saying" james says he can borrow a diagnostic machine would that help?" yes Jodie that would help immensely! Well it would help if i knew how to use one, are they quite user friendly? Cheers steve

Check the block connector under the passenger seat, the wiring moves and brings on the service light amongst others

If it can be fixed with a hammer, then it must be an electrical fault

As said plug it in to a reputable code reader, preferably somebody with CLIP. The Snap-On readers will read the codes but they can be vague.
Some of the cheaper readers are next to useless on these.

glow plug light on a 1.2 petrol Normal. That's a shared diagnostics/glow timer lamp across all models. Don't panic

oh! odd it has a separate mil. bloody french! Has 3 MILs relating to engine electrics, the diagnostic 'oscilloscope' lamp, Amber 'engine' and 'stop' engine. Nice Renault overkill.

It's usually coil packs on Clio's of that age.

What are the symptoms that go with it? I bought a 1.2 02 Clio and it wouldn't idle and bought on the glowplug light, but a rev up would solve it. Had to take the throttle body off and give it a damn good clean, that solved that one, it's because it can't close all the way and it doesn't know what to do. My sister also had one that the coilpack plastic had gone brittle and the spark was actually grounding to the block, not going down to the spark plug. Pull the leads one by one while it's running and see if it changes note or not. I quick fix for her was to wrap the offending coil lead in leccy tape which solved the problem, then replaced the coilpack once we knew it was good to go.
There is something about the ECU loom rubbing and shorting out as well, have a look under the bonnet on the slam panel at the two ECU plugs, see if anything has rubbed. I think I just ditched the offending pieces of metal on both Clio's mentioned above.
They are great cars, if a little plauged with leccy faults!

Thanks for all the advice folks. So today we hooked the clio up to a sealy code reader, and it came up with the following...
000e manifold air pressure sensor circuit fault
0023 intake air circuit intermittent
0025 upstream lambda sensor intermittent + short
0026 downstream lambda sensor intermittent + short.
Am i right in thinking that the first one( map sensor ) could cause the other three codes to come up?
Ebay has a map sensor new for nine quid so the likelyhood is il buy one and see what happens. Once the new map sensor is fitted, will it have to be plugged back in the the code reader to reset or is it good to go? Cheers steve.

You will need to reset the codes after replacement but that seems a bit amiss. The O2 codes are very Renault but the MAP sensor seems strange. I'd check and clean the throttle body as well as replacing the MAP, and clean the throttle body electrical connections and the wiring I pointed out before having the codes reset.

I’d go with wynns carb cleaner on the throttle body too and if that sensor is only £9 give that a go - might make sense to get it ready to do both at the same time if you’re taking throttle body off to clean.
If it was coil pack issues I think you’d experience it running rough on cylinder that has issue.
Seem to remember there’s different error codes for each coil pack too so they’d show if it was that.
