Hi All Have just done all the suspension bushes and all ball joints on this mk4 cortina based thing, I have changed the front tie car bushes when I put it back together I had to undo the rear nut to make room for the bigger bushes and now after searching the net and looking at the haynes manual am no wiser. All I can find is do not move the rear nut when replacing the bushes, There are some comments on measuring the distance between the front and rear wheel Does it need to go on 4 wheel alignment any help would be appreciated thanks again

The front tie bars set the Caster - the big nut on the wishbone side sets the position as the rod should be locked into a centered position in the chassis/subframe by the big cup washers, bushes and the steel centre spacer tube.
You should not have to move the inner nut at all - only the outer one
Any change in that rod length will not only change the Caster but it will also change the toe in out of the steering as well - You can judge on your own abilities to check and adjust these settings if it needs a thrid party alignment or not - However check that the people you take it to know what they are doing first and know how to set and adjust the parameters on the vehicle you have.

Hi, Are there any witness marks to give an indication as to where it was originally? If it's wrong it will drive somewhere between horrible and dangerous.

The only time you need to move the rear nut is when fitting poly bushes as they are thicker and denser so squish less than the standard soft poly bushes they use as standard, if you fit standard type bushes you don't move the rear nut you just squash the new bushes up with the front one, anyhoo too late now, on a cortina you just measure the wheelbase (axle center to axle center at 101.5 inches) if that has a differant wheelbase to the standard cortina you will need it setting up using the factory settings which are below but as said not any old alignment place will be able to sort it correctly unless they understand wishbone sus as most cars nowdays are strut which are easyer to set up ? Hope that helps some, any more info just ask, that screen grab is from the factory manual

Also no good measuring wheelbase on a kit as there are no garantees that the axle is square or centre in the chassis, going that route you could end up with equal wheelbase but axle misaligned and positive and negative caster trail at the front.
Interesting notes about the changes.
