Why do we do what we do? I'm pretty sure nobody builds cars to try and impress anybody. Seems to me its more personal than that. But once its built ( or parts of it are ) its cool to talk about it. ( and/or your plans for it...)
For me its a lot better than taking it to a carshow, where people will brush up against it/ scratch paint/ open doors/ and even will sit in or on it without asking. You loose an entire day that could have been spent in the garage, and you are expected to pay for the privilege as well. Plus, on forums like this one you have a much better chance of communicating with people who are into the kind of builds you are. ( exchanging info that can be vital )

For a complete novice like me its such an eye opener reading about views and seeing builds on here, we are always learning and I like car shows especially when you can see cars that you have been following and meet the owners and put a face to a screen name but some shows are cold and have cliques. Forums are just far easier to communicate and ask a question or two and contribute even if it's just a thumbs up (DO IT).
I am part of owner clubs and it's great but having a rough version of a car as I always do, attendees look down on it...you nutters seem to love just about anything.
This forum for me is No.1 and it's so well put together and people on here are inclusive what ever you drive no matter how rough.
The annual RR gathering has been the best show I have been to.

I liked doing a build thread as it's a reminder of where and when I started, and where I am now ( Photobucket has sort of f!cked that up ) You always get help along the way People will share there experiences with you and hopefully guide you the right way You may get offered parts along the build At the end of it I like going the car shows seeing people's reactions and hearing there comments I'll always update the thread if there's any upgrades going on

It's better than watching mind numbing Eastenders! 😆
It's a great place for a bit of social interaction with like minded people, I've learned loads from this forum over the years and made some close friends who I never would have met if it wasn't for RR.

Obviously people's motivation for posting on forums/communities is of great interest to me both here and in my actual full time job. A while ago I split down what kinds of motivations/people we have on the forum, it pretty much split down to people that like to discover and share, people that like to help (technically or otherwise), people that like to document (builds, shows, car life), and then a kind of collective of 'others'.
I would also say that this:
Is I suspect a false statement, plenty of people do, which is perfectly fine.

You loose an entire day that could have been spent in the garage, and you are expected to pay for the privilege as well. 100% agree with that, I've done quite a few shows this year and end up getting a bit 'bored' and leaving early after paying for the privilege..... Next summer I plan to spend more time in the garage at least until RRG'18.....

Maybe you are right. Maybe plenty people do, but its hard for me to imagine that as a strong enough motivator to see a project all the way through to the end.
In the pre internet days I got my info out of books & magazines ( so that was a one way street ) And other than a couple of my friends & people I competed against ( with my racecars )nobody got to see what I was doing..

I'm far more of a reader than a poster so for me it's to fill the void of cars I'll never have the time/space/funds to build myself, so reading someone else document it is the next best thing for me. I've learnt quite a lot on here too.
I do find this forum seems so friendly and polite and seems to attract far less nobheads than others as well. Although I do miss the forum feuds you get other places - I find them absolutely hilarious!

Agree with jamesiecotter - lurking on forums and poring over other people's progress helps satiate my desires for interesting cars that I'll never get to play with. Its also a good place to ensure you can keep up enthusiasm on your own project!
I used to be very involved in a number of car forums but as the years went on and Facebook started to attract members away, i drifted away too. I've been getting back into posting about my tinkering (mostly on Instagram as it's quick and easy) but am looking for a new home to talk to car people about my rusty Toyota. Always meant to give RR a try - maybe now is a good time to start?
p.s. I was reminded of RR and it's diverse community thanks to Speedhunter's coverage of RRG'17. It appears to be my perfect car show and I've no idea why I've never been!

Firstly it's great to share the problems & glories of older vehicle ownership with other like minded forum readers - to go further and share knowledge - learn from it and maybe pass that information on to someone else during your lifetime for me is a great achievement - without climbing on any soapbox we are only custodians of what we own - so for others to take interest and hopefully inspire a younger generation - game on has far as I am concerned.

I came here in around 2005 I think since HotWire put a flyer on my car at the Retro show so it was a very analogue way of getting me on the forum This was pre-Facebook (popularity) so Forums were the only place to chat about these old things and it I was amazed at how many people had weird car fetishes like me. I owned a Marina Coupe, lowered on slot mags and I'd never met anyone who would congratulate me on owning such a thing until I came here. Absolute perverts the lot of em. Facebook now has lots of groups but I think (hope) people are coming back to forums as they are more focussed and you're not distracted by your Auntie Joan's funny pug. It's a safe place - a place where we can sit around in our pants and 'wow' at a 1929 Jowett Long 2 Tourer or a 1980 Austin Princess.

Also - if the people of the internet don't know the answer, is it really worth knowing?

I post quite often on this forum There is always plenty going on here And it's hard not to comment on the great builds Be it just wheel changes or full blown restos And a forum does not work without people posting And 99% of people on here are top petrolheads The only forum for me now
