So a few months ago I bought my first ever Merc, I had my eye on this car for a while. it was sat up looking lonely at the Car Club at work, So after 4 years of it giving me the 'Please Buy Me' eyes I caved, tracked down the owner and asked begged him to sell it to me. What a wonderful curse word storm I let myself in for! The beauty would start but not run, select drives but not move anywhere, throw every electrical random but then work as soon as you did any form of investigating...I think it might very well be haunted!! So the testing starts, Compression...Spot on maybe a psi difference between the four cylinders, Fuel supply...clean and new fuel delivered on demand, Wiring... well the continuity is there and all the resistances are where they should be, Carb...in pieces and back into a singular piece...Twice! Fluids...all slippy stuff is the right amount of slippy and the motion lotion is just the right amount of motion-y Spark...oh let me throw you a bone wonderful new owner and actually give you a glimmer of hope...replaced a couple of HT leads and a new set of spark plugs aaand nope! Timing...yep my watch is still reminding me now how long this is taking me to fix... Some time goes by where new enthusiastic owner slowly turns into neglectful new parent who has accepted the haunted engine as its own 'special' child...Then beer happened...*what if i just put another engine in it...at least that'll distract you for a bit*...TO EBAY!!! So this weekend a MB 320 CLK W208 will be dropped off at the Car Club courtesy of a salvage yard that thought it was destined for better things that the scrap pile...you were not wrong sir its going to give new life and tyre smoke to my infuriating W123... or will that make it a W331?!...MATHS!!

Check for rot, everywhere. Dads had his 15+ years. been welded up repeatedly. Off the top of my head they rot;
* Front and rear arches * Rear subframe * Under rear window * Floorplan all round * Inner wings * Front Valence * Sunroof channels * Bubbling c-pillars are a result of sunroof channels * Windscreen
In fact, just don't get it wet. Ever. Or wash it.
Barring that, they're absolutely awesome things.
Dads got 5 cars, mutters about selling them all at times. The w123 I've asked to be in his will.
They're c-rap objectively, but infectious.

So the donor car arrived today on the back of a nice gentleman's lorry... his now oil soaked lorry! after a quick poke around I found that one of the gearbox cooler lines had literally rotten in half, at least that cheaper to sort than where my head went in panic mode. So after a very short blast just to make sure it actually moved... oh it moves alright, I got stuck straight in having a good poke around the loom to see what I'll need to bypass, chop off or modify and a general eyeball over the engine and gearbox because I've done no research here I just know I want in in my merc...She needs a name, all my projects have names hmmmm I'll come back to that! Then I just chucked her up on stands and took off some easy stuff lights, bumper (the wings are so rusty i didn't have to undo a single bolt on the bumper), drive shaft and the exhaust, the drive shaft was fun as I had no 19mm spanner bent enough to get on the back of the drive shaft nuts...well i have one now and no longer have a straight 19mm spanner...oh well a reason to buy more tools! Next weekend I'll hopefully have the V6 out and on a pallet so i can get the loom out.

So today was the day the the new heart was removed from it's compliant donor for the old beast As I have no love for this car and an evenings beer fueled eBaying is the only reasons its currently not a small cube of scrap, I decided the best easiest thing to do would be to just cut front crash bar out and from there i just disconnected the everything, thankfully nearly everything unbolted easily, the worst part of the whole operation was trying to work out the the parking selector lock system... in the end i just disabled it... with a pair of snips and after that frustration I sat down for a luxury meal The incredible power of chips later annnd... then after what was only 2 hours, It been set aside not to move for well over a month as I'm away with work but come October the real work starts.

Ultimate solution! I shall watch this with great interest! Good luck! What km/miles on the respective vehicles?

The W123 that's getting this V6 has only covered ~75k but the lack of use hasn't really done the engine any good and the V6 has done ~144k so doubling the mileage on the engine but its modern and a Merc so nothing for one of these

Like the look of this! I love engine transplant threads, especially newer engine into older car.
Cheers, Drew

Was the w123 lump really beyond repair?
I ask for two reasons;
1) original w123 are rising in value, now £5k entry price. £10k-£15k decent.
And,
2) the engines are normally fairly forgiving of abuse. Dads 280ce sat un-touched in a barely watertight garage for about 6 years...new battery, fuel and a service... Mechanically she was fine.
Shell had rotted badly.

Should be a fairly simple transplant, though each one has its challenges. Looking forward to this! (Keep the original engine in storage in case you want to reverse it in future.)

No the engine wasn't beyond repair but the money I'd have had to spent to get the bits I wanted for what in the end will be a slow gas guzzler, this thing is going to hopefully become my daily and I can easily get parts for the new engine and it'll use roughly the same amount of fuel at over double the power and will happily cruise at motorway speeds... but mainly I've never done something this in depth and I want to stretch myself. I know it'll destroy the value but I really wanna try =D

Good luck with it, should be a great usable car when done. My W123 coupe is the only car I've really missed after selling.
