Thinking about buying a 90s Chevy diesel pickup, drove a few of these in the states around 10 years ago, always promised myself one and have spotted a stunner for sale, looks to be in great condition with a perfect spec. Got a great insurance quote which surprised me, however I am a bit nervous as its as likely to be an unknown entity to most garages so what will happen if goes wrong, how easy are they to get parts for, does anyone have any experience/advice on these, had a look around online for UK forums but not getting anywhere... Thanks.

I have no experience with 90's Chevy pick ups, but i've had 90's Chevy cars, and American cars in general. Parts availability is generally fantastic for most American cars and trucks, and the customer service is second to none. I don't think you'll have too much to worry about, buy it and enjoy it.

Thanks, that's reassuring, had a look at that site, can't believe how cheap some of the parts are!

Apparently you can do great things (good HP and silly torque) with a Duramax!

It's the earlier 6.5 turbo which aren't as tunable but I've got an m3 if I want to go fast!

I've had a 1997 K2500 (4wd, 3/4 ton) Chevy Suburban for a little over a year now (as well as a 1975 K5 Blazer I've had for nearly 10 years, and I had a Chevy G20 day van a few years back too). Most parts are easy to come by - as well as RockAuto (who are superb), US eBay is very good, especially if you can find sellers who use the Global Shipping Program. I've just had a radiator support delivered (the box is about 6 feet long, 2 feet wide and 8 inches or so deep, probably weighs 15KG or so) delivered for £38 (plus duties/tax obviously). Rockauto wanted £400+ to ship the same part....
There are plenty of parts suppliers over here if you want stuff quicker too (although Rockauto stuff is generally here within 2 working weeks, even with the cheapest shipping option!).
US Automotive is a company I used once, had no problem with the part I ordered. Generally not as cheap as getting from the USA, but quicker.
There is also a guy near me who brings over containers every couple of months. So if I don't mind waiting a while, I can usually get a good deal shipping heavy stuff over that way - I had my suspension lift kit and wheels (and a few other bits!) shipped directly to his place in Miami, and from there they were sent over. Took a couple of months, but saved a fortune!
So don't let the fact that you can't nip into Halfords and buy stuff for it put you off, there are enough specialist parts places (and garages for that matter) all over the place.

Agree with comments above.
Unless it has glaring flaws, buy it and enjoy it.
Over 20 years old the insurance is very good too.

This is the eBay ad,182687777691, still live although I put down a deposit on it so id imagine it will come down tomorrow, seems like a lot of truck for the money, was quoted £130 a year to add it to my multi car policy which is buttons, originally a military chassis cab it looks to have been restored in the last 5 years and the diesel fitted, it's coming with a fresh mot/service, stack of history, and a 12 month RAC warranty and break down cover, planning to get all this in writing though as ill need to travel from Glasgow to near Leeds to collect and don't want any nonsense when I get there!

So I picked this up at the weekend, first impressions are very good, its in great condition, everything works, its bigger than I was prepared for but that's to be expected as I haven't driven one for about 10 years, its seriously loud too, no silencers, just straight pipes, doubt my neighbours are impressed! Pic with my mini to give an idea of scale!
