I wished I had the available funds when this came up for sale and will be watching with interest how you get on. One day a CL500 will provide the scratch for my V8 itch ☺

Fabulous cars! I have one myself. Bought it as a bit of a project, but not had chance to spend much time on it yet, but it's a stunning car. £74k new! I might be tempted to let it go if anyone fancies one! Although love driving the thing. Anyway, don't want to hijack the thread, just endorsing what a great car these are and what a great buy they are at the moment. Everyone should sample one of these. The spec level is incredible and the one I've got has the biggest handbook pack I've ever seen with a car! Best of luck with it!

Small update:
Went to get the aircon looked at/re-charged by my local garage and as expected it has a leak. It is 17 years old so no surprise really, small pin hole at the front leaking dye, nice easy root cause....awesome. New condenser required.
Whilst the garage were attempting to re-set the aircon system with the OBD (weird thing that Mercs require after it's regassed) they found that the OBD doesn't have a 12v feed. No problem, they hooked up their old skool scanner with it's own 12v and did the business.
I was expecting a bazillion fault codes and impending Armageddon to be predicted but nothing disastrous came up really. Apparently the drivers seat had 34 fault codes associated with it!! All nag codes cleared and we'll see where we're at later on.
Sooooo, not going too badly.....except......bang.....splosh.....oh 8ugger! The Active Body Control (ABC) dampener sphere let go at the front of the engine bay and liberally coated that side of the underbonnet in power steering/suspension fluid. It now sits like it's bagged, all mean and moody.
Right....re-group and get onto Dronsfield for some credit card therapy. I left it with my mechanic last night with the hope that they'll crack-on and get the parts in so I can get some concerted wafting in as soon as possible. Replacement sphere, valve and aircon condenser should be winging their way to the garage ASAP.
I knew things like this would crop up but that was a bit earlier than expected.
Hopefully the next installment will see some action shots.
AL.

No action shots yet but a small update working through the little niggles. Rear third brake light replaced today. The old light lens had fallen off prior to me buying the car so whole unit had to be bought as the lens is not available on its own. Not a terrible job but Merc connector blocks seem to be more difficult the the stuff I've messed with before. Once I'd disconnected the light unit the other problem was the little screws holding it in were corroded in place and needed drilling out. Carefully drilling them out was a bit nervy as one small slip and the plastic boot lid would have additional ventilation. All in place and with my daughter to stand on the pedal I got all led's lit up. Clip the red lens in place with the little gasket underneath and bosh everything back together Next on the list was find out why the key fob opens the car but won't start the ignition. Instructions on how to take apart a fob looked into (it's not as easy as it sounds) and viola mystery solved for one of the key fobs. The little coil that talks to the immobiliser has come off the pcb. The fob still locks/unlocks the car once back together so I'm gonna quit whilst I'm ahead and get this one sent off for fixing and not mess with the other one until I've got a good'un in my hands. Coil should fit neatly in that space on the pcb above it and connect to the copper wire just poking out of the little bit of black plastic. Next on the list....why I'm getting an error on my dash for license plate lights out when they are shining brightly. Could it be that bit of spray grease I aimed at the back of the connector blocks in the boot lid cavity as a preventative measure to stop moisture getting in.....probably....bl00dy typical. Job for another day. Alex

Loved my old one. Great cars.
I was very close to buying this when it was for sale. Ended up buying my E55 AMG, but it was a close call.
Enjoy it. Looking forward to the updates.

News update..........new wheels :-) My all-time favourite Mercedes wheels - big-a$$ AMG Monoblock 2's In related news, I seem to have managed to paint 4mm of super bleedin expensive Continental Premium Contact 6 rear tyre tread onto the roads of Cheshire and North Wales in the last 2 months and 2200miles!!! Think the next set of rears will have to be more robust, the Contis stick like shiite to a blanket but that kind of modern art is a bit more expensive than I can run to. Next week.....these go on I don't think I'll be able to see them through the wheels but ho hum Fitted with some redstuff pads, they should haul the old barge to a stop pretty well. The wafting to work this morning was good. AL.
