Right, this may seem like an easy problem and I have a suspicion of what the issue is but let's wait and see.
My Toyota is fitted with a 1.6 2T engine (or the 2T-U to be more specific ; it's equipped with the TTC-C emissions stuff). It generally starts and runs well, but it is not without its faults.
The main fault is that when you slow down it will cut out or attempt to. It will eventually recover if it doesn't cut out. It also doesn't idle well : I've had to set the idle to around 1300rpm in order to stop it from cutting out and running rougher ; it goes to running rough/hunting in slow motion to almost cutting out. Being an auto this can be annoy if you come to a stop abruptly in gear. That said you sharply rev it and let it idle it will generally try or simply cut out.
I initially thought vacuum leak. With the load of vacuum hoses I changed a couple of split ones, and sprayed carb cleaner to see if there are any other leaks present ; it seems like I have got them potentially.
I have set the ignition timing to the book when it was sort of running and fitted spark plugs, albeit resistored item (NGK BPR5EYs gapped to 0.8mm) ; it's what NGK recommend and the originals to potentially be NLA. The vacuum advance seems to work too. Changing the mixture screw on the carb appears not to have much effect in all honest. It seems to have no vacuum leaks between the carb and the manifold or at the manifold gasket. The vacuum solenoids and filters in place also look to be leak free. The dwell angle is set to 58 degrees.
It's on what I believe to be an Aisin 21000 2 barrel carburettor with vacuum secondaries. Being a car with old fuel I'm thinking possibly the slow running jets are working to their best but with carb spares being scarce and tricky to source (it seems Aisin made quite a few versions of this carb) I'm reluctant to order a rebuild kit.
Any other ideas that I may have missed?
