I have seen the terms "youngtimer" and "oldtimer" used to describe certain German cars. Does this refers to the period of when the car was made like "retro" and "classic" or does it refer to the kind of modifications? Just wondering what this means or is it a purely subjective term that has no definable meaning? Sorry to be a pigeon holer Thanks Robin

an "Oldtimer" is a classic car, whereas a "Youngtimer" is a new terminology for cars of the 80s/90s.... when you look at german ebay, you'll find that everything that has just finished production is declared as a "Youngtimer" ;D but the border is floating, some guys, who have pre-war classic cars still think that a 1966 Opel Kadett is just a used car....

......but the border is floating.... Thats why I was confused as I have seen some 60's/70's audi/VW/BMW etc described as youngtimers and some as oldtimers. I just wondered if there was a accepted cut off time, but I guess the terms are subjective (as most terms are just see how many threads there are about what RETRO is!)

Jürgens´right. There´obviusly no from then ´till then borders on this but the general opinion is that a "Youngtimer" has to be twenty years old - that´s what the insurance companies have agreed on.
An "Oldtimer" has to be a minimumum of thirty years old - this comes from the historical road tax classifiication over here which allows you to register your 30 year old car as an Oldtimer with reduced tax fees. It´s not tax free like pre 1972 in the UK but is 185 Euros if your car is still original or period modded.
This twenty or thirty year classification is a running period and not fixed i.e in twenty years time the new Mondeo will be a youngtimer...that is if it still exists then!!!
So to answer your question Robin, it´s the period not the equipment.
