Hi All, Got an E28 been in the family 20+ years , corrosion had set in well over the years. Is it gone too far ? Can it be saved? I don't want to get rid of it and I know the cost will be greater than the final value but can it be done . All constructive informed input appreciated . Anything can be saved, its all about what £££ you have set aside for the project.
Some pictures of the whole car rather than just the holes would be good too.

The door pillar isn't fixable - That's something you will have to cut out of a donor vehicle - Think you may need one for this to be worthwhile.

Best Buy a welder and get stuck in. She's salvageable in my eyes.

I'm not going to vote on this as I have no emotional attachment to this car.
But i've looked at all the pics carefully and i'm sorry to say, I am a hard headed realist, if this were mine, I would look for a better example.
Having said that, nothing is impossible! if you are a dab hand with a MiG (or are related to one) and have some considerable funds at your disposal (BMW panels are not exactly cheap) then it is do-able. It will take ages and cost a fortune, but if YOU think the end result is worth it and have the necessary cash and/or skill sets, step up and have a go! This is a head or heart decision only you can make. If you REALLY REALLY WANT to save it, i'm wasting my breath (or the wear and tear on my fingers to be more precise) But if we were all sensible, we wouldn't even be thinking about mucking about with rusty old buckets anyway, would we?

I have created an Imgur album of the pictures. Lost the descriptions but at least I can now view it. imgur.com/a/eDjEu

I have two donor vehicles with most of the bits I need , I had considered a mig and going at it myself as I have a large well equipped garage but what I don't have is time . I was hoping about 3k to get the bare shell structurally sound.

Full car pics wont make any difference, the car has no wings on it and is up on axle stands , it just looks like any other rusty e28 but straight as a die with a full service history.

It's a big project, but as you're talking about bare shells it indicates that you have an idea of the size of the project. I have a similar sized project on the go, with a similar amount of rot, with a similar lack of time. I think in this case you just have to accept that it will take a long time to finish - that's what I've done. Personally I'd be looking at stripping it to a bare shell and getting it blasted, and then deciding if it's worth continuing. That's the only way you're going to root out all the grot in a car as far gone as that one, in my opinion. I think £3k to get to a solid unpainted shell is realistic if you're doing some of the work yourself.

Definitely saveable, but very ambitious bodywork if its your first time. If you only have limited time around a busy life the shell will take a couple of years.
If you are paying for the shell work you will have difficulty finding someone to do it to a restoration standard without costing you many £ks, I don't know how many because I've never paid but probably a lot more than £3k and you might need some new panels which could cost a bit but would reduce fabrication costs. The kind of place that does MOT repairs is not what you want at all.
Maybe someone could recommend a good company near you that could give an estimate to help you decide.

I think if you're paying for someone else to fix this car for you, £3,000 wont be enough! I've spent more than that on my pile of rust, and i'm probably only half way through. Good luck though, i think it is saveable, but it wont be cheap.

The 3k wouldn't include doors , wings, or any bolt on panel just a bare shell in primer etch primer ready for a paint shop to work on. I could add another 1 or 2k but I just thought 3k would be ballpark. I'll do all the mechanical electrical cosmetic stuff myself at my leisure. I just want to save it but with a proper resto. I'm glad to hear people think it can be saved .

Anything is saveable, and hopefully you will save this, but as bad as the rust is that you can see, there will probably be as much rust lurking in the body that you can't see. Once you start carving into it, you will uncover more and more. The amount of work my old Carlton has had you just wouldn't believe, and to look at, it wasn't as bad as your BMW. But for me, it needed to be saved, so i entered a weld-a-thon with it! Seriously, i don't think there is a single panel on it that hasn't been welded! And the problem is that the better you make it, the better it has to be when it's finished! Initially i think i thought i'd spend £2,000 - £3,000 and i'd be back on the road, and it would only take a year. Well it's now been nearly a year and a half, i'm into it somewhere in the region of £5,000, and the welding is probably only half done! The problem now is that i can't stop, because who would want it half done, but once it's done, it will never be worth what i am investing in it. However, i am doing this for me, it's not about making money or anything like that, i want this car for me, so the way i look at it, it doesn't really matter what it costs as it wont be for sale! I'm guessing this is how you feel about your car, so i say go for it, try not to think about the money, and just enjoy it when it's done!

I can see the part of once you start you have to finish , that's why I was asking if it was possible to save , general consensus is it is but it won't be a cheap or quick fix. Both of those things I can handle to a certain extent , now I just have to find a capable metal work guy who I can trust to do it right, big ask but I'll want it back off them without sealer or filler so difficult for them to hide anything.
Or else buy a mig and plug away at it very slowly.
Cheers for the replies people.

Well I should get someone who knows what they're doing to give it a good looking over as photos can only show you so much. Then perhaps get them to do the tricky stuff, and get yourself a welder to do the easier stuff. And while all of this is going on, get yourself a build thread going in the Readers Rides section, you'll find the advice and encouragement you get invaluable!

depends if its a particularly sought after model, or the trim etc is in good condition engine and drivetrain worth keeping?
