no direct experience with VAG engines but auto chokes are usually controlled by a block/coolant temperature sensor which actuates a solenoid on the carburettor body to actuate the choke flap, so it will either be: a sticky flap/solenoid mechanism, a duff solenoid coil, a duff block/coolant temperature sensor or a fuse or other power supply issue on the circuit.

oh apparently it's bimetallic which is fed 12v to preheat the bimetallic, check for 12v on that wire paerhaps?

These also suffer from lots of problems with the wax stats.

Wifey's Mk2 1.6 did this, it was a split in one of the numerous vacuum pipes that snake their way around the carb

thanks folks, Ive had it into the local garage they have made an adjustment so its working for now as well as it should be, however they have advised I could do with a new carburettor a weber one.

First thing I did on my old Goof was throw the pierberg carb in t'naughty bin. Bolted a weber on there. LOADS better.
