When we bought SWMBO's trials Defender the PO's dad (PO sadly deceased) said he'd find the wheel nut key. Nearly one year later with the MOT coming up and still no joy. Does anyone recognise this type of nut and could point me in the direction of a solution that does not involve cutting the wheels off please? Cheers, Ian

as its a nut, I would wind another nut down the thread and weld it to the locker, use a socket on the nut you welded to wind both off.

One for Monza Phil.....?
Failing that, Angel Autos on the A37 north of Dorchester have a huuuge tub of assorted wheel nut keys and will even supply you with a chair to sit on and another tub to sort them into.
How do I know this.....? This is how I got the wheels off my A8. Took me 25 minutes to find the right key, which compared favourably to the 90 minutes it took to chew one locking wheelnut off with a carbide burr (access very difficult!) and they are only 1/2 mile from work.....
Must say that yours look alot more open to an approach that doesn't need the right tool!

Spray it with penetrant and then put a good drift/pin punch at an angle in one hole and knock it round with a decent sized hammer.

That looks like an old Cosmic wheel nut, If you can weld a normal nut on there what would probably work, but, looking at the nut it looks pretty symmetrical, and it might be easy enough to make a key for it,

Reminds me of the locking ring on an angle grinder. I guess you've tried the usual grinder key on there.

I have a similar lock nut arrangement that was sold for bolting my Cibie Oscars onto the car back in the day. I've just checked my key and the pattern is different enough for me not to suggest sending it over to try. In your position I think I'd be welding a nut onto it or breaking out the lathe and rotary table to make a key. As you'll be chucking them, the welded nut would be my choice.

Get it roasting hot with a blowtorch and then use a chisel and hammer to loosen it and undo it off.

The my out of that locker is perfect for an "Irwin bolt extractor".
Seriously. I bought one a few years ago and I am super impressed with how good it is.
If you're in Kent come and borrow it. I'd go as far as guaranteeing it will work. Very simple. Very quick.

I think you guys are forgetting the vehicle and therefore the size of these things, the largest Irwin nutgrip is 19mm, landrover wheelnut is 27mm on a 16mm thread.

why not pop in to a tyre specialist, they get this problem every day and I'm sure they can help out. They probably wont charge much. Thats assuming you can get the car there

I'd try a plumbers wrench first Second try to grind some flats on it to get a spanner on it Third weld a spare 1/2" socket to it Last, cut down the thread with a thin cutting disc

I have never dealt with land rover so that's something I'd have no idea about. Welcome for raising that point. In which case my input is invalid. Edit As strange as it seems, would a grinder spanner unlock it?

Cheers, Ian Why is the stud so short compared to the one with the normal lug nut on it? Is is a wheel bolt rather than a lug nut on a threaded stud?

You can get them up to at least 36mm. I wouldn't bother because quite frankly this is a 5mins job with a chisel or welded nut and extractors aren't cheap but still. ;-)

You might get a key from paddock land rover spares, I have the same set on my series 3, I'm sure mine came from them. Had a look and a generic grinder key fits the pin holes, might get u somewhere. I have a key but am located in Aberdoomshire. Pins on the key are 24mm apart on the inside edge and 35mm on outside and 5mm dia.
