So, he smart money is to get information from those who know and over he years I've seen some pretty impressive restorations on here so asking the experts: Any advice on how best to start a first ever restoration. Any things to make sure I'm aware of and things I certainly shouldn't do and in what order should I not do them. I'm fairly sure he best option isn't to just start tearing things off the car and throwing them in the corner. Where do I start...

Thoroughly inspect what you have body wise before you throw thousands at an engine for a car that's completely beyond repair.... Its not a fun realisation trust me.

I would try a rolling resto first. Get your skills up to date and take on bigger jobs at a time. Full restauration is difficult , but set targets and stick to them , and please , please take pictures of How things are stuck together. Remembering 5 years later How it sat , is proeven difficult.

Yea, deffo go with the rolling resto if you can get away with it. I bought a fairly sound 1600E about 35 years ago, and promptly stripped it with the idea of fitting an essex V6, like you do...... The car is still in bits !
