I sort of started a debate on the VW flat 4 thread which I don't want to hijack so I'll start a new one. ;D
How retro is your retro?
My Cortina for instance, its a 1983 car with pretty much all original bodywork, but by the time its finished that will be virtually all thats original.
It has the modified Cossie 24v motor, a gearbox from German 2.9 sierra, central locking from a modern escort, electric windows, 4 Sierra recaro seats, aftermarket wheels and a granny wiring loom (mostly)
It should also eventually have, much more modern brakes, the rear suspension links will be altered although the axle will remain standard (adding LSD) front suspension will remanin standard although the geometry will be changed and the whole car will be polybushed.
Thinking about a Digital dash from a power boat and a built in computer to run my ice as well.
So my point for discussion is,
How retro is YOUR retro?

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Mines a '74, its mostly original metal, 4x wind-down windows (only x2 working ), Real sprung rear seat No aerial for a stereo and no hole for an aerial, early-mid '80s wheels and late 70's disc brakes (i upgraded to mk2 front strutts). So all together pretty fuggin' retro ..... I must be mad ;D

Does it matter how much you update the parts? It's still an old car, still the same car you started with, just better

Totally standard 1987 Mercedes190E. Not really retro, but it's getting there.

Mine is the Charmant obviously, original bar some general rust repairs. Everything visible I'm doing to the car is "period" 80s-ish stuff and Japanese. Hence the Work Equips, old skool Nakamichi tape deck, fender mirrors, etc. Stuff like suspension I'm not bothered about it being period because it doesn't bother me, as long as the car looks the part.
There's a lot of debate with concours type people when they change the original radio or wheels etc. I reckon if it is period and suits the car, why not? It's not like people back then didn't ever upgrade their cars with stuff.
Would it still be retro if I did it up with modern wheels and stuff like that? Who knows! A lot of people on here upgrade their cars with modern stuff and it can work really well.
I guess the best thing about retros is that you can do it your way, you're not really having to stick to a book of rules or do the same as everyone else. If it's cool, it's retro enough for me!

I'm with you there Hirst, i'm a massive fan of period corect parts, period tuning etc I just like driving around like some sort of recently thawed out boyracer from the 80's, lolZ! It's not always the cheapest and best way to upgrade your ride but I love that attantion to detail, and as such everything on my car is an upgrade from the 80's (mine bieng an '83 car). The brakes are 3 door Sierra Cosworth, as are the wheels, and it's got a digital dash from an Astra GTE, RS1600i crossmember etc etc. The only non-retro bit is a mk6 Escort servo, but who's gonna know! ;D Alos agree with the notion that its all about doing it YOUR way, totally agree there and I enjoy seeing retro motors with LS1 engines and the like almost as much as I do period modified rides

Mines a 78, using early 80s drivetrain but a 90s engine. ^^^^^^^No, your's is frickin' class Topi!!!!!! My Magnum has basically stock body bits, with the exception of defender 90 indicators added, 1983 Fiat Twam engine, came with no stereo (but had a speaker fitted as stock???) but i've a period 8-track to go in, original sh1tty seats (fronts I tried to replace with 70's celica items that were in worse condition than Linda McCartney is now), I got some original slot mags to go on but dammit, i've just shelled out for some new tyres!!!! Brakes are still Magnum jobs too.......... ;D In fairness i'd love to have the money/expertise/money to update my drivetrain/suspension but i'm pretty happy with the direction its taking at the minute..............i don't see there's anything wrong with an old body shell over brand new bits either (was dreamin all week of buying a GT6 shell on thEbay and dropping it onto a mazda mx5 chassis)

n. pl. ret·ros A fashion, decor, design, or style reminiscent of things past.
I don't think you can put definate dates on a retro car, if it appears to be styled older than "the norm" i think its retro whatever the ACTUAL age is.

Ah, My Sierra, very retro in that case. 1984 car with a same age Rover engine! probably the best thing about the conversion, it is a retro conversion. some new shiney bits to come, more modern seats and bumpers to slightly ruin the retroness, on paper anyway, hopefully i wont ruin it!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Mine has a radio with only LW/MW, and lacks rear seatbelts. Very safety conscious. Also everything in the interior (bar the dash) is beige, which for some reason is no longer an option on new cars, cant think why...

Also everything in the interior (bar the dash) is beige, which for some reason is no longer an option on new cars, cant think why... We appear to be driving the same car! On mine they went to the trouble of doing colourcoded seatbelts as per the interior, so mine are a fetching shade of beige. I'm not going to fit rear seatbelts as: 1. I'm too lazy! 2. Extremely rare for me to carry rear passengers anyway. 3. Can't even get matching beige seatbelts for the rear!

Escort= shopping-trolley, interesting only because it's a 3-door, curse word engine, curse word brakes, curse word handling, unmodified, rusting, horrible colour....don't care. Love it.
Oxford= generic 'wannabilly' (harumph) not-trying-very-hard modifications, slow, thirsty, rusty, handles like a cross-channel ferry, dissolving chrome, dissolving floor.....don't care. Love it.
The great thing about this place is the warm welcome EVERYTHING recieves.

My Scimmie is 100% old. Retro? No. To me Retro is designing something now using a style of old. The new Fiat 500 that is soon to be launched is seriously Retro. The word Retro is a bit like the word Classic. They are used to encompass a whole genre. Whats classic about many old cars? Bog all, yet we happily use the word to describe anything that we feel is old enough to be labelled it but not young enough not to, if you see what I mean.... Sticking a modern lump in a 30 yr old car isnt retro but it is cool. Keep being cool

I have to come out of the closet here - i could never drive for any period of time a classic/retro with retro/classic brakes/engine/brakes. I like the look of em but i hate the way they drive.
