My recent purchase, it's been nearly 5 long years of retro abstinence AND I HAVE MISSED IT! Only had her a couple of days, so still getting acquainted. Solid body, touch of surface rust here and there. 1.2 engine although slow, it's quite happy! Needs some love as she's my daily. Plans are really just a little tidy up at the front, splash of paint and then get those black bumpers back on pronto - I disagree with the previous owner on this one! Plus switch out the front grill for a black one too. Wheels need a rub down and a lick of paint, was thinking black/white like the last picture below. Further to that probably a 40mm drop ... Engine wise, really needs a clean up. Lots of oil leakage, and is just a bit bunged up. Thinking doing the headset, and going from there. Previous owner fitted electronic ignition. Gearbox not great, gear selection is far from easy..

Hey those are my wheels in the last picture. Lol. Ats classics rule.
On another note. Like the car and I do actually like it without the bumpers too. Each to their own though.

Are they?! Haha classic, I just googled a quick pic! They look fantastic.
Each to their own , true that. Just had a good look at the bumpers I got with it, they look straight enough. All fittings too, so a nice clean and polish and stick em back on this weekend !

Love a mk1 Astra! Personally I would agree with putting the bumpers back on, kinda looks unfinished if you know what I mean?! Cool car though wheels will look great. Rob.

Fond memories of a mates biege mk1, I'm I'm the bumper camp too would the black be a bit dark against the lighter body colour on the wheels, would a grey work better with the polishing? (Not that it's any of my business! And I'm often wrong (my wife tells me ) Looking forward to updates! John

Thanks for the comments - agreed! I'll be staying black on the bumper front though. Just need to straighten up the brackets and drill out a rounded off bolt and they'll be back on!

i like the design of the wheels, i think its a weird offset maybe that makes them look funky (rather than the ride height)

Looks a nice example, will be great if you tidy it up where necessary and put the bumpers back on. Pretty sure the wheels are 6x13" ATS from a Manta B. Would it not be cheaper and better in the long run to fit a 1300/1600 with 5 speed rather than spend out on the 1200? Keep us posted.

The more I look at the wheels the more I love them - they're just right. Can't wait to spend a weekend giving them a tidy up and some paint.
I do certainly plan on a 1300, I know that engine through and through - just a bit more power but plenty for the vehicle I think. I really have no idea where to find one though, I scour eBay occasionally and never see one come up. When I get some work space, I'd like to rebuild a 1300 myself - but for now the 1200 is performing just fine.

Another bit of styling - have always loved these spotlight grills. Doesn't fit spot on, missing a plastic clip here and there but is mounted solid enough. Will need to fettle it a little, as the one lamp is on the curse word! But I think the headlight is too... Pls remove the GTE badge, and swap out the Griffin with my nice red one !

i think the 1200 can be considered "robust" if its the iron head pushrod one i am thinking of. i was looking in the brochures yesterday for another reason and noticed they carried it on until 1989 in the mk2s ! 45 horse is not that horrific in a car that weighs about 850 clicks ? p.s if you fancy a 1600 small block carb engine, i have one in my mk2 which is homeless (still fitted, am using the car as a shell donor for a GTE)

You're right - 45bhp is not too bad in such a lightweight car! It pulls happily enough, I'm just not overly comfortable as sustained high speed of 70+. Still, it's relaxing driving her because there is no power so you don't try and jump into traffic - just sit back and wait!!
Thanks for the engine offer, I do not want to go into the higher tax bracket so maybe a 1400 with a weber I thought

Nice, cant beat a Mk1 they were a real game changer when they were released, if you need any China blue I have about 80 genuine GM aerosols, the post office wont take them now though as its on the banned list I'm not sure if any couriers will

Love the MK1's. Very rare sight these days in any form. Last one I owned was an SR and it was that rotten the drivers door fell of ....loved it though.

Hi both thanks for the comments. I am really loving being back in a Retro ride I must say ! The mk1's have always been a favorite.
Thanks for the offer of China Blue - I would be interested but as you say difficult to post. Where are you located?

So my friend sneakily polished a little part of my rear quarter!! Gotta say though, looks like it came up nice! Just need to protect it properly before I do the entire car.
