Yes, old faithful, the car I didn't ever want to sell (but had to, to get a seven seater) Has been offered back to me. My old BMW E36 touring which I kept immaculate was sacrificed about 3 years ago to raise funds for the LandRover. However recent events have seen me looking for a trusty daily hack. I got wind that the person who had the car was having trouble with it and another car, so I gave them a call this morning. I went around there straight after work to see it and... it's in a sorry state I'm sad to report. It's not far from some of the pictures we have to witness on the 'Abandoned' thread. Covered in tree sap, moss, bird poos and twigs.
The MOT ran out this time last year and I suspect it's been sat there since then.
On a more positive note, I've been offered it for pocket change.
I have to save this car, no.... WE have to save this car!
So far as I can make out the front calipers are seized solid. It has solid discs on the front so the first job is to find 2 calipers, discs and pads to get it moving... well... stopping. There's a bit of confusion I have with what calipers fit, what don't and what I can upgrade to so if anyone can give me part numbers and years/models, details conversions or upgrades (all that gumpf) I can get on the case tomorrow. Reg is S121 LGO, 1999 1.8 TOURING. The plan is to get this back on the road as soon as possible.
Of course, this has come out of the blue so although funds are there I wasn't expecting to restore a car this month, it needs the full treatment: repair, MOT and tax so I don't mind slinging 2nd hand stuff on it to get it out of the hole it's in and keep costs down.
If I do it, it has to get done quickly as I can't have a dead car hanging about!
LET'S SAVE ANOTHER ONE!
Any help is appreciated!
EDIT: Annoyingly, I have a function to attend to right now! It never rains but it pours eh?

Calipers... Can you refurb? Likewise discs... How bad? Can you skim them?
I dragged a Scirocco through an MOT kicking and screaming after it hadn't turned a wheel for 7 years...

Discs are fubard. I already resurfaced them 3 years ago and they're still on it. As with the callipers, they never were the best but got through the mot, if they've been holding on then the pads are shot. The calipers are dead now. I'll get it back tomorrow, at least then it's in safe hands!

Cool. A journey in front of you. Looking forward to sharing in your woes!
One thing... Your current beast is gonna start kicking off when your ex-mistress comes back home. You know that, right? Cars don't like being cheated on lol!

I'll cover it's headlamps, I think they got on anyway. Just hope the gamble that it's just the brakes gone pays off. I'll find out tonight. I'll get some pics of the shocking state it's ended up in too.

If it's been bodged with solid discs on the front with seized calipers I dread to think what else is wrong with it. I speak after buying a similarly bodged car, albeit a modern off a friend as well as curse word my money away on cars I thought had 'simple' fixes. The Modern on the face of it had simple fixes too ; I thought and was told it needed a new injector loom or injector even by the garage who serviced it ; a new camshaft, rear calipers (£120 each being EPBs, tyres, pads, drop links, various arms, bushes, resolving a bodged steering column module, various electrical glitches due to bodges before finally the gearbox shat itself...) ;. I am in a similar(ish) boat with one of my past cars. But as much as I want it back I know it wouldn't be the same. While I made my mistake selling it would take a fortune to put it back. Ask dickdasterdley. He did it once on a car not quite as bad! Maybe I have been bitten badly but IME not many people out there truly care for cars. With those kind of bodges the writing is on the wall IMHO. Sometimes we can't save them all, and there are better cars to be saved . Anyway, it's time for some pics.

Agreed and it's too late as it's sitting on my drive. She stuffed it into a kerb 2 years ago and I put new lower bouncy bits on the front on both sides and forgot that I also put new discs and pads in it at the same time and a new battery. Although, where it sat the battery was nuked. The osf caliper is partially seized so it's not locked on but is rubbing and it sounds like one of the boxes on the exhaust has detached inside. Cam cover gasket is shot, air con belt is missing, remote locking doesn't work and it's filthy inside and out... I mean it's disgusting! I reckon it'll be on the road in two weeks as I can only throw weekends at it unfortunately. They only wanted a hundred quid for it but I gave them a drink on top. Engine sounds fine, still has the same little niggles it had when I got rid of it but it's done 30,000 miles on top. I just hope all the bird curse word on it hasn't mullered the paint. It's weird seeing it back again, now I have 3 cars... Doh!

But I then I'd have to pay someone.... actually, that's a good call. Here is how he was in 2013: You could eat your dinner off of it. Now you'd just catch diphtheria.

Nowt like a bit of Dheli Belly to make you REALLY know what you have eaten. Aye you ahve to pay someone but... For £20, maybe £30 if you go posh, so that you don't have to deal with the worst of it... That leaves you with all your energy for polishing and the nice detail bits and inspecting paintwork. You also won't have to go through the "OMG! FFS! AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!" as you find more and more problems with paint you thought might have been ok, so there will be a net gain in how you feel about the car afterwards. You know it makes sense all round.

(I do have a small hankering for a German Estate V8... So BM, Audi... Er, that's all I can think of! LOL! I know yours isn't but it made me remember about a BMW I so very nearly bought from a mate but then the throttle stuck and it sent its self through a hedge)

The 1.8 engine in that cracks me up, it's like someone has chopped 2 cylinders off with a cheese knife. It's not a brilliant engine tbh and I don't rate it much but it does do what it says on the tin and that's about it. The main problem I have with normal looking cars is as I own two massive and 'special' ( in every sense of the word) cars, I notice I get 0 road rage from other motorists. With this you get it every journey guaranteed.

Cheers, need that caliper, it's solid discs. I cleaned it on the outside this weekend, it took hours. Moss and mud and other nasty slimy things were removed but it needs a mop over, the bird curse word affects this paint badly. I noticed some extra battle scars to add to the ones already on there, nothing mental though, the rot in places has advanced a bit so I need to address that or we'll be getting the welder out next year. An overall examination was carried out. The front caliper is fubard, I'm not even going to bother looking to repair it, the wheel is locked on and screems in pain when moving. The usual E36 suspension issues, both arb links are burnt toast and a osf ball joint is hanging out. The tyre valves on 2 rims are split around the neck, they're too long for the rims and I guess have been hit on kerbage. NSF inner wishbone joint dust cover is punctured. All three wipers are shot and the rear has scrubbed the glass which is a shame. Rear exhaust is hanging off, too far gone to bodge back together with a welder. Both rear jacking point underside covers are missing, fallen off due to corrosion which doesn't appear to be serious enough to have compromised the structure but the side skirts will have to come off, clean up the area, treat and seal. It also needs a service badly, the oil is like black treacle with a leaky top cover. Spare tyre is flat, don't know why but it's a budget so will be changed to match the others on the car. I also changed the battery, I can't be ar$ed charging it all the time and it doesn't appear to be retaining a charge anyway, and I changed the world's shortest vacuum hose to the fuel regulator as the one on it just crumbled up into bits when I touched it. Other that the above, it seems quite happy. I want to source a leather interior for it, cream in colour would be nice but as it's a touring, will a standard saloon interior go straight in? What about hooking up electrics for the seats? Is it a plug and play type operation, I doubt it but one can always hope! The seats in it now are disgusting and matted in filth besides being worn. Want an 18 button OBC too, a mod I never carried out... If it'll work. Lmk about those caliper/s please dude.

£308 in bits + MOT + tax. Not including the battery I just got it. Could be cheaper but some items have to be quality and not Chinese fluff. That's fully serviced as well...and away she blows. Not too sad really.
