I am fitting an ST205 charge cooler core to my MR2, and I need a pre-rad. I don't want to use a Cinquecento coolant rad, like is fairly popular, as they are not really suited to charge cooling. People mainly use them because they are cheap.
So, I plan to use a universal alloy one, but what size core should I be looking at?
It's a rev 3 turbo and runs 300BHP, but in the future I will be looking for more like 500BHP, so I want this to be up to the job.
Cheers.

Get the biggest one you can fit Thanks, mate. I suppose that makes sense. Dunno why I asked lol. Supposedly the Celica core becomes inefficient at around 350 BHP, but that would keep me happy for a while. Now to find a core with the inlet and outlet on the same side.

FWIW the stock chargecooler rad on the Pace system has been questionable for my RST. It seems Pace made one with a bigger rad, one almost the same size as the factory rad! It wasn't the thickest thing in the world but to be fair it did keep the temps cool.
I'm surprised no one has said just get an intercooler but I do know that with the rad it was still smaller than an intercooler, and on an RST running an intercooler generally results with removing the grilles etc. on a Series 1.

largest frontal area you can get in as said . I used a 600x450 doblo engine rad with the very fine fins that cut you to shreds if you catch them with a pwr 6x6 barrel cooler and 450hp and it worked superbly on the road and took 20 mins of track abuse to get the water up to 40c

It largely depends how you use the car. If it's on boost all the time its going to need a much bigger rad than a road car. Like people say tho. The bigger the better really.

Remember the radiator won't cool the charge coolant back to ambient in one pass, it is the duty of the reservoir to have sufficient stored & pre-cooled coolant available to reduce charge temperature when on boost. You'll notice serious installs have a reservoir of a few gallons for this. Then, when the engine comes off boost, the pump circulates the coolant back through the rad and slowly brings it back down to ambient. So to truly engineer the solution you'd calculate the flow of your pump against your reservoir volume and select parts so that pre-cooled coolant will be available in a worst case scenario. Which isn't that long really: e.g 20 seconds of coolant in reserve is likely more than enough (Think how fast would you be going at what full boost for 20 seconds...) Just food for thought.
Anyway if you want big and cheap, I think the P38 range rover came with a 2 foot square exchanger that is/was cheap on the bay.

I had a 3 litre reservoir and two Bosch pumps with one right next to the cooler and the order at the front on the return line . One pump was enough for road use with the other on the same switch for running high boost . Even the best setup will saturate eventually and with a gauge monitoring temps coming out of the front rad I could see when it was time to cool down

There's always water or ethenol injection too, have you considered that?
